The article noted "no BCS schools received warning letters". I wonder if this is referring to '07 or I'm missing something.

    Last I checked, we're a BCS school.

"Some BCS programs have additional resources to put into the academic support system," he said.

No BCS team received a warning letter.

I thought we received one ... did I misunderstand that?

Why are the Historically Black Universities being given waivers? Is it due to a lack of academic funding? This isn't a complaint or even a veiled opinion. I'm genuinely curious. I understand why schools effected by the hurricane would be given waivers, but the article didn't explain why HBCUs were given waivers.

Maybe they aren't counting schools that got waivers. I think ISU Basketball got a waiver due to the coaching change.

Re: We're not the only one hit with the scholarship issue...

Yes, we did get a waiver. I also understand from the DMR article, we lost 2 scholarships. Supposedly we lost those in '06/'07. I either wasn't aware of that or forgot.

I'd really like it if someone could give a brief summary of exactly how this has impacted ISU and will/could this year and next.

It would have had more impact had we not lost half the team anyway. We were not able to fill the scholly's so we took the hit right then. It will not affect our future unless we don't get guys to graduate.

You wouldn't know that based on some of the comments on that Texas A&M message board.

Re: We're not the only one hit with the scholarship issue...

We were granted the waiver last fall and took the two scholarship hit on the 06-07 season whereas most school will be taking the hit this coming season in stead. We had 11 scholarships this past class instead of the typical 13 due to the "sanctions". GMac was being proactive in asking for the hit last fall so we could have full recruiting classes this year and ongoing.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

this makes me even more impressed with Gmac's performance as a coach last season.

I still can't shake the feeling that we're going to be in for some trouble if Dunson transfers in bad standing academically.

Re: We're not the only one hit with the scholarship issue...

The following was sent to me by the TAF (LSU's Tiger Athletic Foundation). It brings up another element to this whole APR thing that I had not heard of before...a “confidence boundary” which does not subject you to any penalties.

Seventeen of LSU’s 20 sports were above the 925 APR target score. Three others --baseball, men’s basketball and men’s cross country -- were within a “confidence boundary” and not subject to any penalties.

The confidence boundary is a statistical adjustment made for sports with specific sample sizes. It is a means to recognize academic performance in such circumstances where a sport’s squad size may have the effect of distorting the data. Currently APR scores are determined using three years of data, but confidence boundaries will be reduced and eliminated as more data is available in future years.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Cincinnati was the only other bball warning letter school besides us that matterted in the BCSA group. Wayne 'n Huggy Bear together at last. Next warniong letter we lose games and practice playing time. A third warning letter means death spiral or no NCAA tournament.
