Hoiberg: "Pieces starting to fall into place"

ISU basketball: Fred Hoiberg says pieces starting to fall into place | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

A few tibits from the article:

His first piece was signing Otzelberger, an assistant to former Cyclone coach Greg McDermott, to a five-year contract that includes a guaranteed annual salary of $200,000.
Hes also searching for a coaching strategist.

Im pretty far down the road with a couple guys, Hoiberg said. The next hire will be somebody that has experience, whos been on the bench, who can put a game plan together and can run a practice.
No wonder TJ stayed...$1 million guaranteed.

And it sounds like he is close to filling out his staff.

That is a bargain for ISU. Nice job by JP and Co.

Will be interesting to see whom Hoiberg selects to fill the strategist role.

Worries me a little bit when he says he doesnt know what his role will be, referring to Grayer. I guess in my book he has a year to figure things out and make changes if need be. The next hire will be the most important and hopefully the most thought out.

this is encouraging to me. Sounds like Fred feels it is not wise to have Grayer as one of the three assistants. At least that is what I am hoping.

I think his NBA ties are going to help him more than we thought.

Re: Hoiberg: "Pieces starting to fall into place"

I kind of read the Grayer thing as if Fred gets his top targets, maybe Grayer does a year or so as Assistant DBO and then moves into the regular assistant role. Whoever the lead assistant is will probably not stick around forever.

I, too was interested in TJ's contract. It's nice to see us really invest in an assistant for basketball. The really interesting part was that Pollard basically admitted that the reason they moved so fast was to keep TJ since Fred said he wanted to keep him. I wonder how things would have changed if Fred hadn't said anything about wanting to keep TJ or how long TJ would have stuck around without a new headcoach in place. I'm guessing with the offers that he had, he probably would have been gone by the weekend. I certainly would have, not knowing if the new coach would want to keep me.

Hoiberg sure seems to be saying a lot of the right things. He talks like a guy that knows what he is doing.

During his first press conference that was the stuff that I thought was probably crap. I figured it was what he could say about recruiting since he had no expirence.

But if it is a line, it sure seems to be working on the recruits. They all seem to gush about that when being interviewed.

Interesting how salary's have escalated. Johnny Orr probably made less than the assistant is now most of his career.

That's true, but it's all about inflation. He probably paid .25 cents for a gallon of gas and .15 cents for a gallon of milk.

Not in 1990. Gas was more like $1.30 and milk $2.00/gallon.

Re: Hoiberg: "Pieces starting to fall into place"

I will preface this by saying I have no prediction how this will turn out, I am excited to find out though and am really happy he is in charge.

Is it just me or does a sense of calm come over a person when Freddie talks? Seriously, it is like my heart rate goes down or something. Like he has everything under control and everything is going to turn out fine.

I remember thinking that when he played in high school and college, for such a young kid just seemed to be so calm, totally under control, not overwhelmed or nervous about anything. Could never tell from looking at him if they were up 10 or down 10 or if he was playing well or not playing well. Never seemed to get tired either.

Hope that rubs off on his teams as well.
