    How about a debate forum?

Just an idea that I thought of tonight, with the lively debate in the Jay Leno thread. How about a debate forum, where two Clones can square off on whatever issue they want, and others can vote on the winner?

I think it would have been interesting to see two posters throw down over the hot issue of the day........McCarney......Eustachy........Morgan.......who's the best hire for basketball or football......political issues of the day.

Maybe even have a challenge issue system where you can send a challenge to whoever is getting under your skin on a particular issue. Even keep track of challenges issued and accepted, win/loss records, etc.

I've seen some really good arguments raging back and forth in the middle of a thread, with people jumping on board one side or the other. It'd be cool to see a couple Fanatic heavyweights going at each other. Just a thought.......I haven't really seen that anywhere else.

Re: How about a debate forum?

While I don't mind seeing some debate issues on this forum, I think we should try to leave political and religious things off the board as much as possible. I think it would tend to cause a few problems from time to time that we just don't need on a Cyclone sports forum. Thus, I voted no.

It could be a decent idea if you moderated the topics to be less hostile (like keeping them related to sports or politically-numb topics).

Re: How about a debate forum?

I can see your point, as some things do have a potential to get a little nasty, but I have seen more restraint given to some of those topics than to whether or not we should keep a coach. I suppose it would require a little attention from the moderators.

so long as we pick two people who are civil, and light hearted posters. :) I think sports debates would be most advantagous. I agree with trunk about the politics and religion - just a little dicey for the nice open air in this forum. :)

Politics are OK to debate, but I don't think religion would be. A good current events debate forum would be good.

Re: How about a debate forum?

It's a good idea... we've thought about it in the past... but to make a voting system and all that good stuff would involve a lot of coding. So maybe if Jeremy gets bored and is looking for a new project... I saw we hammer him on it.

EDIT: We thought of having a weekly topic... topics would be put out in advance and one member could register for each side of the debate... then alternate so many posts or such... then instill a voting system either overall winner or points for good arguments... and such... but it never took off. But if enough people really like the idea... it would help to create more of a community and maybe Jeremy will implement it.

Re: How about a debate forum?

yes and no, it is a good thing every once in a while but having it everyday would just get annoying

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Re: How about a debate forum?

So we wanna turn this into something like the Hawkeye report: Off Topic board? cause that board is ********

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

Re: How about a debate forum?

A true debate would be an assigned topic where the two members of the debate are assigned a side. So if the topic was..."Should Wayne have been fired?"...just because you supported him doesn't mean you'd debate the "not fired" side.

I like the idea. Set one time slot a week where 2 members would debate. Members can apply for a debate slot and that's it. They would be informed they've been chosen for that week's debate a week in advance. A day in advance (or less), they would receive the topic and the side they are to debate. Everything done at random.

What would be even better, when the public debate takes place and members vote, they would not know what members were involved, who had what side or who they were voting for. Votes would be cast purely on the content in the debate.

    Just a detailed idea. :)
