Thumbs down Hancock article (media at it again)

Read the article from ESPN.com on Cardinal's pitcher Hancock. The article is entitled "Earlier wreck, report of drinking fog Hancock death". It's articles like this that remind me why I don't read or watch much mainstream news.

ESPN.com - MLB - Hancock in accident three days before fatal crash

Officers who talked with Hancock moments after the predawn crash last Thursday in Sauget, a village known for its factories and strip clubs, found the 29-year-old reliever to be lucid and not under the influence of alcohol, Police Chief Patrick Delaney said Tuesday.

No sobriety or breath tests were given to Hancock, and no tickets were issued, according to Delaney.
Catchy headline to make you think he was drunk when he was in the accident. This article is looking for nothing.

You have to read all the way to the end to find out that, a couple at a restaraunt saw him being served drinks at dinner.

Thursdays accident occurred at an intersection near a liquor store...
    Tasteless.

I thought they were stretching a bit too. They even made a point to say that the suburb he was in was known for its strip clubs. However, I am wondering about the results of the toxicology screens.

I agree. Wait for the results and then make your report.

What does an accident 3 days before in a town known for it's strip clubs, at an intersection that happens to be near a liquor store, and reports that no drinking was involved have to do with his Sunday accident?

I agree with you completely jtd...that was disgusting to read - I know of car accidents that happen all the time on college street - a block away from my house here in Cedar Falls: I don't think newspapers need to put "the accident happened near the college drinking scene known for its bars and liquor stores."

Re: Hancock article (media at it again)

That is pretty low...they even go to the point where they say he didn't visit any of the clubs or liquor stores and that he was just driving around as he has done many times.

If that's truly the case, why even report all of the "bad" things in that part of town?? Low blow IMO.

Yeah, that is pretty disgusting reporting. It takes a concerted effort to think of all the seedy things that you can to try to make it a story. The guys death isn't evidently big enough for them.

They did the same thing with Darrel Kyle...talked how he had some marijuana issues. I'm sorry, but NO one is perfect and the media should only focus on good things and focus on the fact that people will miss the deceased. I am embarrassed sometimes of our nations' media.

Re: Hancock article (media at it again)

I agree that this article is tasteless especially if the tox screens show he was not drunk. I was listening the M&M yesterday, so consider the source, but they were talking about people in the bar where he was at saying that he was so drunk he couldn't speak in complete sentences and was slurring speech pretty badly. They offered to get him a cab but he said he was just going to his hotel which was right nearby so they let him drive....BIG NO NO. Maybe it was just another Marty tirade, but if true there has to be a lot of people nervous about how their actions led to this bad ending.

Re: Hancock article (media at it again)

Speaking of ESPN.com and the stupidity of the mass media, I was just on that website and saw this headline referring to the NBA

"Report: White refs call more fouls on black players"

Are they seriously making this a race issue? Give me a break!

    Here's the story
ESPN.com - NBA - Report: White refs call more fouls on black players

Re: Hancock article (media at it again)

This is going to be a big story when its all said and done. The reports are he was late for the Thursday game b/c he was hung over. Saturday night he was drinking at a bar owned by a former player and radio announcer. The post distpatch quoted witnesses saying he could barely put a sentence together.

When combined w/ LaRussa's OWI in spring training, there is at least the appearance of serious irresponsible drinking with this team. It looks bad, especially when the team plays in a stadium named "Busch".

In addition, the Post Disptach reported marijuana was removed from his vehicle.

Re: Hancock article (media at it again)

While his death is saddening, everyone is looking for a reason to his death and you can't help but to report what they did. There were witnesses that said they saw him drinking at dinner and apparently someone even offered to call him a cab before he left the Resturaunt is what I heard on the radio this morning. The possibility that he might have been drinking before the accident can't be ignored. The toxicology reports will either verify this or rule it out so it's a valid story IMO. It's not trying to dirty his reputation, it's just reporting what has come out. There were way more "feel good" stories about his life than what has come out about this new discovery.

Wait for the tests, then report. I agree with some of what you are saying, report what is worth reporting. 75% of this article though is talking about his previous accident where no alcohol was present (fact). It tries to link drinking to the previous accident by stating "there was a liquor store near by" and "numerous strip clubs".

Actually (unless the article changed) it doesn't mention anything about a liquor store neraby. It says

"in Sauget, a village known for its factories and strip clubs"

I live in St Louis and that is exactly what Sauget is known for.

It was in the original article and I quoted it in the original thread post too. Detroit is also known for it's strip clubs, but it's not news when there is a car wreck near one.

The accident happened on Illinois Route 3 off of Yellow Brick Road -- named for its proximity to the Oz nightclub. The intersection is also near a liquor store and small-scale truck stop.

Hmmmmmmm. I guess ESPN agreed with you that the reference wasn't necessary and removed it.

Bad reporting? Probably. Am I surprised? No. Anymore, you have to read main stream media with your own internal filter to separate the facts from the slant/spin.
