    Super Conferences just a fad?

With all of the talk about superconferences and how everyone is trying to add as many teams as possible, I'm starting to wonder how long they last. What's the incentive for all of these conferences to go to 16? I'm starting to think that conferences would be better off by splitting into two 8 team conferences.

    Scheduling
From what I've seen speculated about scheduling, you play each of the seven division teams every year while playing two from the other division. That allows for each team to play each other one time in a four year cycle, but doesn't allow for home and away every other year like the Big12 does now. So it would be eight years in between road games to teams in the other division. Why even consider a team that you only play every four years even in your conference?

    BCS
With only one automatic BCS spot per conference, why would you want to add more teams to that mix. Rather than a 16 team conference, why not just have two 8 team conferences? In most situations even half of these conferences would get an automatic bid. Wouldn't the extra money of having two BCS teams every year make up for not having a championship game? Then, if you have enough worthy teams (Big12 south 08 & 09) then you can essentially get 3 or 4 teams in your two 8 team conferences.

    TV
Even with two 8 team conferences, you can still strike the same deals that you can get with one 16 team conference. Look at what the Big12 and Pac10 are trying to do. You can sign a deal together and still divide it up between the 16 teams.

Not saying that this will be the future, but can anyone explain why bigger is always better?

And you were right on cue...

On a serious note 8 or 9 of the threads on the front page are of conference expansion. What a waste of space.

Also..... People this is simple. Big 10 expansion = $$$$ They will be able to print their own money.

The problem with the 16 team conference is that it will be hard to maintain IMO. The WAC and MWC had a super conference...granted not the level of the Big 10 schools, but scheduling and travel was a nightmare...What happens when Notre Dame or Rutgers decides they bring more to the table than they are getting? Or how about when Iowa only plays Michigan or Ohio State twice every 8-10 years...

And finally lets say the ACC, SEC and whats left of the Big 12 and Pac 10 follow suit...what does that do to the FIVE BCS games...takes a bunch of drama IMO...

It is an issue. It happened in the Big 12, fissures develop over time and now it is possible some original members are leaving. Who could have imagined 15 years ago Missouri and Nebraska would be so ****** they would go to the B10 and give up the rivalries they have had for 100 years? Who is to say at some point fractures wouldn't develop in the B10. It will be 20 years or so from now, but it could happen.

Why would a 16 team conference bring in more money than two 8 team conferences? I've seen where the Big12 championship game was figured to bring in an additional $5 mil, where a BCS bid is worth $17 mil to a conference. Where else is a larger conference getting more money?

That is where you fell into it... And the person you quoted... And I fell into the trap...

I understand the expansion talk and I'm interested how things will fall, but we don't need 50 threads on it. I am satisfied with posting on previous threads.

    GREAT POST!!!!!

The money isn't going to be that much more by adding 16 teams. But you just wait until ND, Mich, OSU, PSU, Neb are all in a National Title hunt and they can only take 1 or 2 for the BCS or whatever it is then.. Super Conferences won't be so hot then. Especially when you don't play 1/2 your conference.

I seriously think the Big10's best deal would be to add just ND and get a championship game. Its only 1 more team to split with and they add a lot.
