Cushing to be suspended 4 games for roid use

The reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year will miss the first four weeks of the 2010 season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Texans linebacker Brian Cushing is being suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on steroids and related substances.

Per Schefter, Cushing appealed the suspension during the scouting combine in February but was told today that he will be suspended. He can participate in training camp and the preseason but will have to sit out Weeks 1-4 of the regular season.

It's the second time in the last five years that the reigning defensive rookie of the year has been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs; Shawne Merriman won the award in 2005 and was suspended in 2006. Although Merriman was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, a rule passed in response to Merriman's Pro Bowl selection prohibits players suspended during the regular season from being selected to the Pro Bowl.

So Cushing, who was selected to the Pro Bowl after 2009, won't be a Pro Bowler next season.

Cushing started all 16 games for the Texans after being chosen in the first round of the 2009 draft. Prior to the draft Cushing was the subject of a false report that he had tested positive for steroids at the 2009 scouting combine.

UPDATE: Steve Wyche of NFL Network has confirmed the report. ESPN's Michael Smith points out that Julius Peppers was suspended during his Rookie of the Year campaign, so this has happened three times in eight years. Yikes.

I guess I doesn't "surprise" me, but I didn't know it was 'known'.

    Disappointing.

Re: Cushing to be suspended 4 games for roid use

The Associated Press announced Monday that it will conduct a re-vote for the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year award, citing previous winner Brian Cushing's violation of the NFL's policy on PEDs.

Cushing is eligible in the re-vote, but he's not likely to win. His All-Pro status is also in danger of being stripped, as the AP will re-vote for one of its outside linebacker positions. Though Jairus Byrd finished second in Defensive ROY voting in the winter, we're betting third-place finisher Clay Matthews would edge him out considering Green Bay's finish to the season. Brian Orakpo, who had 11 sacks to Matthews' 10, may also be a serious contender.

mixed feelings on this decision. While he probably doesn't deserve the award in light of what's come out, taking it away is a step towards a slippery slope. If you take his award away, do you also take away Shawn Merriman's rookie of the year award, because of his trouble with PED's? How about Rodney Harrison and HGH? Do you nullify Super Bowl titles because of it? Where is the line?

Honestly, the AP comes out looking bad in this. If they would have just left it alone, nobody would have blamed them. Their voters didn't know he had tested positive when they voted.

Now they have egg on their face, because their voters have now knowingly given the award to a steroid user.

I find it hilarious that it backfired this way. The AP made things worse by revoting.
