I think our 2012 non-conference sched is pretty weak. Possibly 2013?

Chris, why are you opposed to playing Cal, Oregon, etc? It would be an opportunity for exposure of ISU on the West Coast for potential recruits, and could bring back relationships from high school and community college's that were lost when Ash left. Minnesota played Cal last year and start a 2 game relationship with USC this year. It adds an L to the schedule, but wouldn't you rather go west coast and ditch the Iowa game? It's unpopular, some would say sacrilege, but what do both schools really earn besides in-state recruits and the points in the Cy-Hawk series?

    Re: Williams Blog: Cupcake City!

I completely agree Chris. Until we get to the point where our BCS finish actually matters, we're playing for 1. making a bowl, and 2. a better bowl once we've gotten eligible. Since the biggest factor is overall is wins, if we can almost guarantee ourselves 3 wins going into conference and then only have to knock off 3 teams in conference to make a bowl, that's what we need to do.

Too late to do it now for 2010, but i really hope we buy out the @utah game for 2011, and i have a feeling the football staff would agree on that.

    $$.

That game is a guaranteed sellout for both schools with high ticket prices.

Couldn't agree more. The fact that we may have pretty good teams in 2010 and 2011 and fail to get to a bowl game is unacceptable. Nothing will take the winds out of our sails when it comes to recruiting like failing to go to bowl games.

    Re: Williams Blog: Cupcake City!

Both men's football and basketball just need to taste success, in any form and at the detriment to any level of team. Yeah, it sucks to watch the Clones beat on an inferior opponent, but I think that this is critical to building confidence for the future tough games against ranked opponents.

I'd compare it to UNI and how they get a pass all season long until tourney time in March, where they can take their shot at the big boys.

    Re: Williams Blog: Cupcake City!

I am all for scheduling give-me's if we can get off to a good start. But as I mentioned earlier with the 2007 team, if we schedule these cupcakes and fall flat on our face, it hurts us that much more.

    Re: Williams Blog: Cupcake City!

There is NO incentive to play a tough non conference schedule. the stupid BCS system makes sure of that. All they care about are wins. The only time it matters is if you are one of the top 3-4 teams.

There is no scenario in which I think we should not play Iowa. It is great for the state. The last thing that Iowa State needs is somebody telling them who they have to play.

    Re: Williams Blog: Cupcake City!

I could not agree more Chris, and I have been saying this on here for a long time. I know a lot of people are always talking about how much fun it would be to play Minnesota or Wiscy, or maybe a Pac-10 team or an SEC team, but at the end of the day, if we aren't in the chase for a BCS game, it doesn't benefit us at all.

Go to cupcake city. Get those sure fire wins. Get to a bowl game every year. We should never enter Big 12 play at worse than 3-1, and frankly we should always play 3 of our non-con games at home every year. If we owe someone a return trip, do it on the years where we host Iowa. This will give us 7 home games per year every year, which means more money in the bank and an even easier road to a bowl game.

Building this team we need wins and exposure, and the cupcakes are the way to get there. We probably aren't even going to get exposure by playing the likes of Utah or Northern Illinois or UConn, at best they will be like a night game on some obscure cable channel.

Buy the W's. Build the program. Get the fanbase used to winning. When we are ready, then we can start to build up the schedule.

Imagine my disappointment that this thread wasn't coupons for a new bakery called Cupcake City.
