    NCAA Cover 08 Jared Zabransky

Is this the first year that the player on the NCAA Cover doesn't get drafted?

Also, whats up with Chris Leak not being drafted either?

The NFL puts tons more emphasis on the combine rather than actual results. Troy Smith goes very late, Leak doesn't go at all...yet these are the 2 QBs who led their teams to the national title game.

Also, LSU's second receiver was selected before Dewayne Jarrett.

I don't really understand it but they know what they are doing.

I think a lot of it has to do with fundamentals of some of these players. NFL scouts see something wrong with their mechanics that outweigh the upside of their athleticism. Lots of guys can be fundamentally flawed and still put up big numbers at the college level because their athletic ability masks their lack of fundamental mechanics.

In the NFL, everyone has loads of athletic ability. Teams might not take a chance on a guy who might be able to un-learn his poor habits, or might take a year or two to develop.

After watching Jared Zabransky from Boise State, I think I would take him over about half the NFL QBs right now. Plus, he's a tough kid!

Re: NCAA Cover 08 Jared Zabransky

I think the biggest problem with the pro game when it comes to QBs nowadays is when one is drafted, especially early, they are expected to come to a losing situation and be that team's savior. Few teams want to spend a couple of years making sure a QB's fundamentals are sound and a team's been built around them before completely throwing them in the snakepit. In my opinion, that's why QBs such as David Carr, Ryan Leaf, Rick Mirer, and Tim Couch failed. It's really hard for a QB to be "the man" coming straight out of college without having the opportunity to properly transition. I guess it's easy to have those unreasonable expectations with QBs like Peyton Manning's and Michael Vick's successes, but these guys are special cases (Manning is just that good and Vick has the kind of wheels that most defenses can't plan for and most QBs don't come with). I think the approaches that are being taken with Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay), Phillip Rivers (San Diego), Carson Palmer (Cincinnati), and Drew Brees (San Diego/New Orleans) are extremely appropriate because they got a chance to learn the system behind another QB before being thrown into the fire. I also like what's being done with Alex Smith (San Francisco), Eli Manning (New York Giants), and Jay Cutler (Denver) because they're getting the responsibility immediately but not nearly as much pressure to perform - they're willing to let them make mistakes in decent systems (in Smith's case, he had a decent system built around him while learning).

Will Russell and Quinn be successful in Oakland and Cleveland? Only time will tell. But both of them are expected to be "the man" on teams that aren't going to give them much help. I think Quinn has the best chance to be successful because it looks like the Browns are building a solid team there (the additions of Jamal Lewis and Joe Jurevicious as well as the maturing of Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards). But if too much is expected of these guys too early on, they're going to be labeled alongside Couch, Mirer, and Leaf.

As a side note, as much as I hate the Carolina Panthers, at least it's nice to see David Carr going there as a backup. He has a chance to learn things in Carolina he didn't get the chance to learn in Texas and possibly rebuild/salvage his career.

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

I agree, and who ever says he isnt is a fool, what the guy did was awesome, and i think a team will pick him up and he will be a solid back up and eventual starter

also just saw that leak signed a contract with Chicago

Ok...back to the OP...does anyone know if Jared if the first player on the cover of the NCAA game not to be drafted? He is very deserving of the cover and I am glad he is on it and not Smith!

I hope someone picks him up too because my wife and I are boise state fans. (She grew up in Boise and went to school there)

He will not become a starting QB in the NFL. He may start a game, as a 3rd stringer with two injuries in front of him, but never a starting QB. I have watched the kid for three years and while he is a solid college QB he is by no stretch of the imagination, an NFL starting QB. There is a reason (many) why he was not drafted.
