    Question regarding scholarship offers.

    Jeremy (or anyone else),

On the 5/8 roundup it was stated that ISU had offered a scholarship to Smith. The 5/10 roundup seems to indicate that only 1 more scholarship will be awarded. If so, who is ISU competing with for Love, Smith, and/or Stigger. Have either Love or Stigger been officially offered a scholarship?

Thanks in advance for any information.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Smith has been offered and Love and Stigger will compete for a scholarship, in my opinion. Now, that doesn't mean that the staff would take two or three of them. With Blalock now gone, it is possible that Smith and Love or Stigger would be signed but I think just one of the three will, if any.

It may all depend on Smith's decision. There are some indications that the staff may be waiting for him to decide before offering to one of the others. All three are starting to see their stock rise though and other schools will be trying to sign them quickly before the signing period is over.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Thanks, Jeremy. I appreciate the information. I know that the signing deadline is May 17th. Any chance we will know before then if any of these guys are signed? Who is ISU fighting with to land them?

PS. I think BB recruiting is one of the most fascinating aspects of the entire athletic department due to the small number of scholarships available to each team. Even one mistake is pretty important.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Smith is being pursued really hard by Cinncy. Love is being somewhat quiet on his choices but Nebraska and South Florida are offering him the world to play for them. Stigger is being pursued by anybody that has an oppening. Not many schools are openly talking about Stigger because of his past, but he is being pushed hard by many schools right now.

BB recruiting is an artform like no other in sports. It is hard to judge a book by it's cover and many times that is all you get to do these days when it comes to looking at talent. I think GMAC has the right staff around him to get it done though. I have heard really great things about the assistants and their job so far.

    Jeremy,

Just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoy the site and particularly the roundups. The information that you are putting out is exactly the type of information that I go to the web to find. It is great to have an 'insider' sharing this information with the general public.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Jeremy, I am told that the number of ships will be two only if Smith accepts. They want one of those two bigs regardless. I actuallly was led to believe that someone committed to us and we were deciding if we wanted to take him. That must have been Stiggers. But I think we will have two new recruits, because the word is Smith will say yes.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

    KC,

I hope your sources are correct. This is the perfect scenario IMO as it will give us depth in the guard court and fill a huge hole in the middle. Also, it will leave two open scholarships for '07 - '08. If Smith and Stigger are D-1 players and from the looks of the schools recruiting them, they are, then I think it is better to take them now to get ISU's new staff off to a good start next year.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

What is great about it is that with JUCO players, we can rebuild the program for the next two years but not suffer in the wins/losses because of signing 4 year committs that don't develop. We can win right away and then keep building for the ultimate goal.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Totally agree, Jeremy. I think this is the best of all possible scenarios as it still leaves a lot of flexibility with respect to scholarships in the next two years plus it gives ISU a chance to be competitive immediately. I think this is good news in light of how bleak the roster looked as recently as three - four weeks ago.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

I think people will be amazed once word starts coming out regarding potential 07-08 recruits. We are on the list of a lot of quality players and are even on the list of a high number of 4 star recruits already. I really can't express how excited I am for the 07-08 and 08-09 recruiting periods. It will be fun:)

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Although human nature, I try not to get too excited about recruits. I remember hearing all these great things about Taggart and Carr and we all know how they turned out. I'm a old timer, I remember when Orr recruited a highly regarder center from Minnesota by the name of Brad Dudek. He ended up quitting after he realized he couldn't beat out David Moss, who nobody recruited. And so it goes. Regardless, I hope ISU gets another player or two in order to provide needed depth.

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

As much as everyone would like to know who some of the '07-08 prospects are, it's really in the best interest of the program for that info to remain confidential as much as possible. I respect Jeremy for excersizing restraint in releasing information that he may be privy to. Why show your hand to your competition in a public forum?

    Re: Question regarding scholarship offers.

Jeremy and Urbclone- Even though I like JC recruits, one thing everybody needs to realize is the attrition rate with JC's is much higher. When I was involved in juco, we had a ratio that 1 of 2 really help D1's. If you look back at ISU and other schools it is about right. I know McD feels this way. So we need to be realistic that if we sign 4 JC's this year, only 2 will really help our program. If all do that is great. But I think McD is looking to have more than 2 ships for 07-08. He is planning on at least one of these guys to bust. Not what we want to hear, but it is reality. I don't totally agree that signing these JC guys will cure all our problems for the next couple of years and keep our win total up. I hope it does, but we need to keep our expectations realistic for next year at least.
