    Big 12 expansion

If the Big 12 wants to remain relevant they need to look at adding markets with tv sets. Some of these are not quality teams yet but I wonder if joining a legit or what the Big 12 would hope makes them one of the 4 or 5 super conferences. The league should probably look at their own tv network, even if they can't make what the Big 10 does. This assumes the league can keep Texas, and if thats the case it doesn't need any more Texas teams.

Here are some of the ideas:
    Northern Illinois
    Cincinnati
Can one of the Michigan schools in the MAC work?
    Pittsburg(if the Big 10 doesn't take them)
    Louisville
Colorado St. (if it keeps the Denver mkt.)
    Is there a Louisiana school?
    Any other larger southern markets
Utah or BYU but not both

Then the biggest addition of tv sets would be adding Fresno St. and San Diego St. this is a lot of viewers, and I think Fresno St. could be a a very good team in a major conference.

We could lose 3 schools easy leaving the Big 12 with 7 open spots.

To reduce travel costs maybe non-revenue sports play more regionalized schedules.

For ISU's sake I hope they are making pro-active plans.

Add 2 teams and become the Big 14? I'd consider that.

Memphis and Arkansas seem like they could make sense.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of those, and maybe New Mexico or something like that, but that would be a long trip.

The idea of adding Memphis used to **** me off, but the more I think about it, the less I hate it. For one thing, Memphis is a great city, and is only 4 hours from St. Louis - meaning I could make a weekend out of it every other year!

    Re: Big 12 expansion

Why isn't anyone thinking internationally yet. Mexico City is like the 2nd largest population area of the world. I say we add them, maybe Rio and Tokyo. Lets see the Big 10 Compete with that TV footprint. Then the Big 12 could sign the biggest TV contract ever with ESPN Deportes

Seriously though, the bad spot that the big 12 is in is that even if they are "pro-active" it is going to be for smaller fish then they are losing. Nobody out there can bring what Nebraska, Missouri, or even Colorado can to the conference in terms of tradition or tv sets.

Best case scenarios though for ISU to me: Cincinatti, Arkansas, maybe Memphis or Colorado St. Any Texas school, or southern school in general = horrible news for ISU.

No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference. ~Tommy Lasorda

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Memphis the suck in football? I mean, worse than Baylor bad?

Arkansas is getting too much money from SEC to leave. Big 12 couldn't match it. I'd welcome them tho.

Yep. They were ok like 5 years ago, but I think their basketball makes up for football, just like the opposite is true with Nebraska.

    Re: Big 12 expansion

As long as the Big 12 has Oklahoma and Texas they are relevant in football.

Memphis was a good one I didn't think of, it is a good sized market and is new territory. I read the piece from SI Chris had posted and if the Big 10 isn't going after Pitt I think the Big 12 should make a big pitch for Pitt, Cinncinati, Louisville and I still wonder if Northern Illinois could be come relevant(Chicago/Illinois is a lot of tv sets).

We may not like some of the matchups we are stuck with but if the Big 12 doesn't add markets ISU is going to be playing a Mountain West, MAC or Conference USA schedule anyway.

If they want to make their own network and make money, could they go to 18. Add those East/SE schools and add a couple big markets in California, a BYU, Colorado St., maybe UNLV? Then you could have more of a West conference and a East Conference.

    Re: Big 12 expansion

When the Little 11 takes Mizzou and Nebraska and Colorado goes west to the Pac Ten.....Notice I didNOT say IF.....Its gonna happen boys and girls....

Now its being promised that the SEC wants Texas and Oklahoma and are willing to take aTm & Okie State to get the 2 best teams in the big 12....

When this happens I think that the powers that be in the big 12 should consider/ talk them into ....MERGING with the Mountain West.....

The Mountain West has their own TV Network and that makes them Prime Material for a Merger....

The Little 11 is going to 16 games and so will the SEC if they can get Texas and Oklahoma to join.....

She's coming boys and girls and its time for those Dead-Heads in Dallas,TX to come up with a contingency plan....

And if they dont like my plan then make another plan or your league is gonna PERISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Big 12 expansion

One other school I didnt think of at first but would be someone to look at if Pitt. wouldn't come is Temple. Its in Philadelphia and a large school. They have been bad in football in the past but were a decent team last year.

    East Carolina is another one.

If the league gets Temple or Pitt. or both, Cincinnati, Memphis, Louisville, Northern Illinois that is a lot of tv sets and maybe can make the footprint for a viable tv network. I still say then try and add Fresno St. & San Diego St. out west and have a 18 team league. sprinkle in Colorado St. if it keeps Denver & then BYU, possibly UNLV if neither come.

Again the league needs to be proactive and start thinking outside the box.

    Re: Big 12 expansion

My pipe dream: MU, NU, ISU go to Big Ten11. Bringing in the two Kansas schools would also be good. At the end of the day geography and natural rivalries have to come into play. I realize TV sets are driving this while at the same time it still comes down to fans getting excited about the other team and tuning in to watch.

I really feel that ISU brings more positives to the table than what peeps are giving them credit for. Clearly football is the driving decider but other sports and academics have to be of influence. I think this is where ISU fits in.

Let CU go West and let the the TX and OK schools stay South.

    Pass the crack pipe.

    Re: Big 12 expansion

ISU to the Big 10 is a pipedream!

Maybe Northern Illinois can't be legitimized by being in a power conference but I would study it.

but look at Temple/and or Pitt, Cincy, Memphis, Louisville those add some markets for eastern states.
