    Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

Anyone else think that if Rhoads had gone out last year and gone 2-10 or something along those lines, that we wouldn't have Fred Hoiberg as our new coach?

What I mean by this, is that Pollard noticed how much excitement and success was built up around the program in one year under a former Iowan and a Cyclone at heart in Rhoads, so now that we needed a new basketball coach why not hire a guy with similar feelings and passion towards the university?

And with that said, had Rhoads not been successful AT ALL last year, I doubt Hoiberg would've been hired.

I dunno, just been thinking about it a bit. Either way, can't wait to see the staff Freddy puts together and the future success we WILL be having very soon.

I can see your way of thinking and I couldn't give you an answer. I believe is really important to bring coaches that want to be here and know what it takes to win here. The Hoiberg hire maybe could've happened if Rhoads had a bad year because he showed interest the previous ISU basketball coaching search. Well anyway I am optimistic that Fred will be able to put a good staff and the team will be around .500 in the conference.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

Or maybe even Pollard as our AD. Could you imagine the uproar by the fans of having 2-10 football season followed by that basketball season?

7 wins including bowl and win @ Nebraska bought the athletic dept. a lot goodwill.

CPR and Fred are raising our athletic department from the dead. JP just needs to stay in the background and let those two coaches clean up the messes he created with the Chizik and GMac hires.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

Interesting question, but the answer is that the two are totally unrelated IMO.

Most ISU fans did not know Paul Rhoads from boo prior to his hire. We ALL knew who Fred Hoiberg was and most of us cheered for him as a player. Taht makes the dynamic different.

Totally different reasons for excitement for each hire. But more importantly...

For football, we'd just got burnt on lack of loyalty to ISU. We needed some assurance of loyalty in the next hire.

BB -Exact opposite. Most of us thanked the Good Lord that McDermott chose not to be loyal to ISU and left. Loyalty to ISU was far from the primary concern.

    Apples and oranges.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

Interesting question, but maybe the reason Paul Rhoads did so well his first year was because he was from here and wanted to make it work that much more becasue of that?

I don't think it would have made much difference.

I agree that with Paul Rhoads and Fred Hoiberg in town, Pollard needs to become a desk AD. There is no reason for him to be the face of the athletic department anymore. His stamp is on the department. Now, he just needs to let things happen.

I think that's probably what Jaimie wants too. I really hope this is the last major coaching search I have to to see for quite a while.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

I think that the passion that Paul put into the Football team really made a huge difference in the product on field. And is all likelihood, was demonstrative of what was missing in his first FB Coach and Men's BB Coach hires. The Coaches who are successful here seem to be blue collar, roll up your sleeve types that love ISU. This is a home run in that aspect.

I think Jamie deserves a lot of credit for trying to give the fans what they want. The first two hires didn't work out, but he has listened and adjusted his strategy. What more can you ask for? I also think Jamie shows passion for the school. Not sure why so many people have it out for him.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

By staying in the background, I mean that JP needs to not do or say anything to bring attention to himself, something he seems to have relished in the past. I think it's accurate to say that JP has been a very controversial a.d thus far with many fans. He needs to keep a low profile and let people forget about the bad coaching hires he's made in the past, and let the true blue clones that have come back home to save our football and basketball programs get all the attention. I don't want to hear JP on any talk radio shows or see him doing a bunch of interviews, I want to hear what CPR and Fred have to say.

On the other hand, you have the Cael situation. That is closer to the Fred hire than CPR. CPR was qualified. Fred and Cael were the new HC selections based on their legend status with ISU, not their qualifications.

But I do suppose that had CPR not had success, JP could not afford the Fred hire. That, and the fact that GM had run the program down so far that taking a chance is a lot easier to do. JP is playing with house money on the MBB. GM saved us $2.0 million buyout next year, and as JP himself was pointing out, MBB is less than 10% of AD budget. He can afford a risk on the MBB hire. FB is the one that HAS to be right.

    Thanks for the response.

I don't feel JP does "a bunch of interviews" now. That said, I think most of us are interested in what JP has to say.

    Re: Pollard/CPR/Hoiberg

capitalcityguy-Fair enough. I'm just one who doesn't care a lot about what JP has to say at this point and would like to see him stay behind his desk and do what he does best, the financial aspect of the job. Most of his coaching decisions were failures and we can all be so thankful that Auburn and Creighton saved us from more misery.
