Will you accept if Hoiberg has Alford kind of success?

Meaning: Improvement from GMAC's aweful record, being consistantly at the middle of packin the league but no better, occational league tornament wins, and occational trip to the dance

Actually, there are a lot similarities between them: both were great college player, having learned from great coaches, both are fan favorate and created excitement at hire, having personal charism and able to recuit.

Alford had haed coach experience before coming to UI, but still failed to tranform his recuiting abilities into wins on the court.

So could Hoiberg do better? Remember when Alford was hired, he had complete fan support as well

I get the comparison, but there's one important point: Alford is a pompous ***, Hoiberg is not.

Re: Will you accept if Hoiberg has Alford kind of success?

I think Hoiberg will do better, the thing about Alford was that he was a ***** and not especially humble. I think Hoiberg is a good guy (like better than GMac) and very humble. That said, I'm sure that we as fans will accept the improvement if we were mid big 12 most seasons. But Hoiberg said in his PC that he was aiming for the top and I don't think he will accept mediocrity.

You beat me to it Clone9.
The character chasm between these two is too wide for me to make any comparison.

Yes. The days of having above average teams in the Big 12 and automatically finishing in the top half of the conference is over with the emergence of the aTm, Baylor, etc.

I think Miller and Deace had a good point that Fred is more humble than Steve and he will surround himself with a much better staff at the start of his career. IMO he will get his Craig Neal on staff immediately and not after years of underperformance.

Alford also only won one NCAA Tournament game and had a sub .500 record in the B10.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I think Hawk fans would have had more patience with Alford if he wasn't such a horse's *** off the court.

Re: Will you accept if Hoiberg has Alford kind of success?

How about LE success (on the court)?

Meaning, a few rough years with some serious success along the way.

I don't expect ISU to fall in line with KU and Texas. I do hope that we can be consistent winners. That we come out of non-conference with a solid record and at least hope for the conference season. That we are competitive game in and game out in conference. That we are contenders for the conference crown, semi-final participants in the post-season Big XII tourney most years. And maybe once a class, we can honestly EXPECT success there. That we are semi regular fixtures in the Dance, and absolute fixtures in post-season play.

    I don't think that's too much.

Re: Will you accept if Hoiberg has Alford kind of success?

    Here is what I expect.

1.)Night in and night out, we can beat anyone
2.)We are a legitimate threat to make a run in the Big 12 tournament
3.)We make the NCAA 3/4s of the time and when we are there, we compete and make runs
4.)We do all of the above with integrity and a positive representation of ISU.

I do not think I am asking too much

It's all snark from here on out

Right now I just want to see a team win more than 4 conference games.

Re: Will you accept if Hoiberg has Alford kind of success?

I think if the start of Hoiberg's career mirrored Alford's record at Iowa, I wouldn't be all that upset. In fact, Alford's tenure wasn't nearly as bad as it was made out to be - it's just Alford's douchebaggery made it appear worse than it really was. I mean, Iowa saw postseason play 6 of the 8 years he was there, and 6 of the 8 years he was one game under .500 or better in-conference record. The three things that killed Alford was him being a gigantic d-bag, getting upset by Northwestern St in the first round of the 2006 NCAAs, and not making any postseason play at all in 2007.

However, after awhile, maybe a decade or so, I think even I would start getting impatient with Hoiberg if that was the best he could accomplish. Looking back at Alford's tenure, while it wasn't nearly as bad as most remember, there is serious stagnation involved. After about 5-10 years I'm expecting more than just bumbling around mediocrity - I want constant Big 12 championships, NCAA Tourney appearances, Sweet 16 seeds, deep tourney runs, and hopefully even a Final Four appearance. If the best we can do after a decade or so is what Iowa did under Alford, I would definitely become discontent.

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

I love all of these hypothetical situation threads popping up about FH. Why don't you just sit back and let the man do work instead of guessing his every move?

And for Kansas to absolutely hate coming to Ames.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
