    Neighbor's dog question

I live in Lincoln, NE and 2 houses down some new neighbors moved in last week that have a dog. Usually every day the wife and I go for a walk in the evening when it is nice. They have a fenced in yard that is quite big and on the deck they have a smaller plastic dog kennel for a smaller to medium size dog. Every time we walk by the dog is in the kennel and whines as we walk by.

The thing that has been bothering the wife and I is the past few days the weather around here hasn't been the best. Monday-Wednesday it was super windy (sustained winds about 25-35 mph). Today it was about 83 degrees and windy.

At 11pm the other night my wife was outside in the garage and heard the dog whining again. It went one for about an hour.

The worst thing is that tonight we have had severe weather from about 7 pm on (wind, heavy rain, very small hail, heavy lightning, heavy thunder). I stuck my head out the door thinking that the dog would surely be inside, but it wasn't-- the dog was barking frantically and whining the whole time being in its kennel on the upper deck.

Not sure what the situation is, if the people work at night or not, but the dog always seems to be outside locked in the small plastic kennel. I have seen their car in the garage a couple of times.

Wondering what we should do. Should we turn them in? Feel sorry for the dog - they have a big fenced in backyard but continue to keep the dog in the kennel. It has been hot and now a thunderstorm/tornado watch and it is still out there. Any suggestions?

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

I'd turn them in and not even think twice about it.

talk to the other neighbors and see what they think of the situation, then go from there.

Pretty easy decision in my book, call the cops and let them deal with it.

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

do you notice the dog in the kennel at other time of the day, or only when you walk by at night? If the dog is out there while they are gone for 2-3 hours a night I wouldn't consider it a huge deal. If it spends a large part of the day/night in there, I would consider that an issue.

Huge pet peeve of mine.... If you're going to get a pet, you take on the responsibility to care for that pet. You need to act as an advocate for the dog and call them in. If there is a logical explanation like a temporary situation because they just moved in, they'll be able to explain it.

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

At a minimum, call the rescue league or animal control and they can come ck it out. You can probably even do it anonymously so they dont even know it was you who called. Do the right thing, help the animal out. Animal control has people trained to deal with situations like that. I can tell you care or you it wouldnt have bothered yall, thats awesome, get involved, do something about it. Good luck!

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

There's a simple solution. Kidnap dogs, sell them to your local chinese restaurant. You get money, they won't have any more whining. Win win.

    ok seriously. report it.

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

It's probably just a Husker fan wanting to keep close tabs on his girlfriend... I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure its normal in Lincoln.

Kidding, just as well report it.

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

I think the fact that they have a large yard, and also were willing to put the dog out there knowing there is weather are the two tipping points. Using a kennel for a few hours is OK, but submitting your dog to the weather like that is not excusable. I'd call at the first raindrop.

    Re: Neighbor's dog question

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Just stuck my head back out the door a bit ago and didn't hear anything-- the weather has calmed down or it is possible the people came home. I'm hoping for the latter.
