Big 10 going to 4x4 Divisions?

According to Tom Dienhart that's the "buzz" with Missouri and Nebraska joining the league.

Jon Miller talks about it on his site:

Will the Big10 expansion kill the NCAA?

After reading the newest crack pot Big11+5=Big10 arguments I started wondering if this move will start a domino effect that will ultimately kill the NCAA. It was discussed before that the NCAA is just an organization that runs the show. If these expansion / re-alignment ideas come to be, will this just be the reason to push the NCAA out?

Here's how I see it breaking down. If the Big10 grabs two or three Big12 north schools then the Big12 will be forced to raid other conferences to remain viable. With Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M still in the south there is just too much at stake to just let the Big12 die without a fight. Let's just say that the Big12 takes some teams from the SEC and the Mountain West. Being that they have already copyrighted the Big16, it makes sense that they've already considered expansion in the past so if they are adding teams, why not also go to 16. In the process, the Pac10 would likely follow suit as well as the SEC and ACC. This would result in the destruction of smaller conferences and leave just the 5 superconferences. At that point, would congress feel the need to step in a speak up for the teams that didn't make it into one of these conferences? Would they or could they step in a blow the whole thing up?

I don't see the Big 10 actually expanding out to 16 teams. 16 teams sharing 2 BCS spots doesn't seem very appealing. Also the scheduling for football seems like it would have to be a little sketchy.

Why in the hell would any SEC team leave to join the big 12, who is losing members at that point?

Not really, in the Big11+5=Big10 4x4 model, you have essentially the same situation as the Big12. You play every team in your division (3 games) and two of the four in the other three divisions (6 games). You do add one more conference game, but this way you play in every road stadium every four years. Now, the Big10 might make things hard for themselves by not placing rivals in the same division, but that's their problem.

Although I have no idea on how they will do a conference championship game. Maybe a plus one model?

Would never happen. They have a better chance at getting ND to join the Big 10.

Re: Big 10 going to 4x4 Divisions?

If Missouri and Nebraska go to the Big 10, and Colorado goes Pac10, we're by far the most northern team in the Big 12. Since the original Big 8 would already be raided, it wouldn't surprise me for the Big 12 to drop us altogether. However, after BYU, Utah, and TCU, there doesn't seem to be an obvious 4th school to add, so maybe we'd be alright.

The most likely landing spot for us if we lose the Big XII looks to be the MWC. If they lose BYU, Utah, and TCU, that isn't attractive at all. Any way you cut it, severe conference realignment will not be a positive thing for ISU.

Re: Big 10 going to 4x4 Divisions?

It would be a sad day to see Mizzu and Nebraska leave the Big XII.

Maybe these rumors are leaked to put pressure on Notre Dame to join the Big 1213141516, maybe not.

My hope is that the possibility of loosing two of the charter members of the conference (or any for that matter) will force the Big XII take a look at restructuring the revenue sharing and at least dip their toe into the conference network pool. Doing this would assure the long-term viability of the conference. The Big XII head honchos need to think long term and not about the immediate gratification of the money grabbing schools in our conference.

I seriously can't wait to see how this all pans out. I just hope mighty ISU doesn't get the short end of the stick.

The Big 12 can't drop us altogether. We're a charter member, but there is no doubt that severe realignment is bad for ISU. If Nebraska and Missouri go, I think the only good option is to hope we go too.

I don't see the university presidents signing off on Nebraska joining. They don't fit the academic mold at all.

Do you have a link for that? It seems like they would have a much better situation in the SEC than a depleted Big 12.

I'm starting to get a really uneasy feeling about the future of ISU and conference realignment.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”
