Who will be the mentor for Fred?

It will be the most important hire for Coach. It is for all the marbles. With Floyd assisting the search and Pollard all in this could be just as important as hiring Hoiberg.

Re: Who will be the mentor for Fred?

This just seems really weird. Fred could work out great, there's no way at this point to tell. But I'd be pretty freaked out if my AD hired a men's basketball coach who'd never even coached a junior high team, much less anything else.

Pollard clearly likes to shoot from the hip, but part of me thinks this hire is more about his own ego and generating buzz than finding the right person to guide the MBB team into the future.

Granted, I'm an Iowa fan and Barta is as boring as it gets. I'm probably just conditioned to live in a more vanilla world. Hope it works out, Freddy's a class act all the way.

I don't know Gonzo. If you listen to the guy he sounds like a coach. He's confident and I think he's ready.

I don't know how much you've followed Fred over the years. When you think about someone who is the typical coach, you think of Fred. We all always thought that it was a shame that he got into the front office business rather than the coaching business. We didn't know he's been planning on coaching for a long, long time.

It doesn't have to be an Iowa State guy. I'd look at a 45-50something former head coach that for whatever reason got out of the business. You obviously don't want someone who has completely failed, but someone that got booted at some point would be fine.

If I was to guess whose opinion and advice, FH seeks out on a regular basis, I would say Flip Saunders.

Re: Who will be the mentor for Fred?

Based on the Tim Floyd connection and a guy with Big 12 experience is former K State head coach Jim Wooldridge. Ric Wesley though could be a possibility. I'm still trying to find some other guys that make a lot of sense that I think we could get for the amount of money we probably have to spend. Terry Carroll is another guy that I definitely wouldn't count out!

It's gotta be a guy with no urge to take over or move. See the Keno/Tom Davis set up at Drake.

I feel pretty good based on those supporting this hire he will find the perfect guy with experience to come in for a few years.

I think Ric would be a great choice. He could finish out his career here. His time to be a head D1 coach is passing. He could probably make just as much money as an assistant at ISU as a Head D2 coach.

Since your a Hawk fan, I was wondering if you give me your idea of why Hawk fans hate Pollard so much. I have absolutely no opinion on Barta, or whoever was AD at Iowa before him. Not trying to flame you in any way, I just don't understand
why Hawk fans care about our AD so much.

Ok thought that might have something to do with it. But they need to get over it.
I have to look at Hawk propaganda everywhere I go. It's just publicity.

Re: Who will be the mentor for Fred?

My opinion why Iowa fans hate Jamie - he's exactly what they wish they had, someone who doesn't take the safe road all the time, someone who is not vanilla and will say what he thinks. Jamie is not afraid to stick his neck out there for something he believes in, Barta is mister safe and conservative.
