Re: Blog: Players love the hire

This is amazing...last night I was thinking "WTF?" but about every hour I get more and more excited about the hire. I am excited to see/read Hoiberg's plan for everything and hear reports about how our players are progressing and everything.

It's absolutely GREAT to hear they love the hire and can't wait. I know this actually goes a long way in how hard (and well) you work if you have a ton of respect for the person in charge of you and you like the work you have to do.

Re: Blog: Players love the hire

When I read that quote from JVB, I wondered if the weight he was referring to was just the coaching search like he seemed to allude to later. I can't help but think the players view Hoiberg as a breath of fresh air from the previous coach.

Green hills for thy throne, and for crown a golden melody/Ringing in the hearts of all who bring thee love and loyalty/Dear Alma Mater, make our spirits great
True and valiant like the bells of I-O-WA STATE!

And thank you Stumpy for this:

I love that Diante is happy with the hire. That kid takes more crap than he deserves, and he's never wavered.

Well, when McDermott was hired, they all just bolted.

Now that I've gotten over the emotional elation of Freddie's return, I started looking forward to next season and for some reason(can't really pinpoint why), I keep thinking that Dendy is going to be one that is really going to benefit from the change. Maybe it's just the overall attitude change coming over the program.

Fred said more than once today that the players will have roles. He will coach to their strengths and away from their weaknesses.

Dendy could be an NBA player IF he learns his role. And his role is to not take jump shots or handle the ball. His role is to be scrappy on the inside. Get offensive and defensive rebounds, get putbacks, and block a lot of shots. There is a great need at the NBA level for this kind of player and Hoiberg knows it. I agree that Dendy will benefit greatly.

But I also think DG can take his game to a whole new level as well. Fred says that he is going to work tirelessly with DG this offseason on his jump shot. That will make DG a very good player.

Players knowing and buying into their roles is the key to any team success. I think that Greg tried to get the players to grasp their roles, but ended up with mixed results. When Lucca left, for example, he implied that he felt that he should have been more involved in the offense. Thinking that the offense should run through you and having the skills to do so are two different issues. I hope that Fred gets better buy in and better results.
