    Why I'm nervous...

First I fully support any and all Cyclone coaches, players, recruits and various administration folks. I truly hope Freddy can realize the lofty success already being talked about on these boards. Parts of the fanbase are already fitting Freddy for a cape with a big S on the front. He's never coached a game in his life but some claim thats his edge. He's never recruited a kid in his life, but people say he's a natural and kids will all know who he is. People are already saying our situation will be the new paradigm in college basketball. We already have Reggie Theus and Bill Laimbeer coming on as assistants. Folks talk about HB melting at the mere thought of playing for Fred. Others say the casual fans will flock to Hilton to experience the joy that is Hoiberg just to witness him coach a game. It WILL be special since it WILL be his very first. This rhetoric has gone far above and beyond that we've seen for any other coaching hire - including the LE delusionists even though LE HAS a track record.

I sincerely hope this works out for all parties. I'm personally excited for the change just for changes sake but we're foisting an awful burden already on Freddy without any reservations or rational thinking. While I celebrate all things Cyclone, we outta think about managing our expectations just a bit because we may find that Superman can't fly. Or that Santa doesn't exist. Or that women DO have a special spot.......

Welcome home Freddy and best of luck in your new career as Cyclone head basketball coach and all-around messiah.

Oh - and he's not taking a salary so he can devote it all to assistants... The more we build up our heroes the more disappointed we are when we find out they are humans like the rest of us.

Freddie will always be a Cyclone icon to me, win or lose as coach. We're obviously sitting at rock bottom, and I think Fred will get the breathing room needed to get back on track. It's going to take a couple of years.

    This confused me

Next year is really a no expectation year. If Fred beats creighton, Iowa and finishes 500 or above It's a huge success.

    Re: Why I'm nervous...

No way in hell is Reggie Theus (former NBA head coach. Current assistant) or Laimbeer coming to ISU. Laimbeer quit coaching in the WNBA just late last year because he wants to be an NBA head coach. Coming to ISU to be an assistant would end that goal. Absurd comment by the OP.

I think he was repeating absurd comments to highlight the absurdity.

Chill out man. People are excited. There's nothing wrong with that.

    Re: Why I'm nervous...

I am nervous for Fred too. All I can say is I am excited and the hire made me stop feeling so sad about the state of ISU hoops. I admire the guy and will do my best to be a good fan and support the team he coaches. He has already done the whole running of ames thing once he can probably handle some pressure.
