How do Iowa State fans react if...

How do Iowa State fans react if four years from now Cyclone basketball under Hoiberg isn't faring much if any better than it was under the McDermott regime? What if ISU still isn't being invited to the dance? Or if Iowa State is still among the lower tier of teams in the Big 12? How will you react?

I know I will get crucified for saying this, but I will anyway. Having moved to central Iowa a dozen years ago, I have found Cyclone fans (as a general rule) to be among the most fickle and certainly amongst the least loyal of any fan base I have ever seen.

With Fred Hoiberg being among the most revered of all former Iowa State players, regardless of sport, if he fails to bring the program to where you want it to be, do you turn on him? Personally, I think once again this shows the immense failure of Jamie Pollard. I'm afraid Pollard has once again painted himself into a corner. If Hoiberg fails, fans will most likely turn on him and one of Iowa State's best will leave Ames with a tarnished reputation.

It's a tough, tough situation. If I were Hoiberg, I would stay put, keep my reputation in place, and let someone else get crucified in Ames.

    Back in your hole bugeater.

Most fickle and least loyal huh? Does the name Frank Solich ring any bells?

I don't think fanbases get more fickle than Nebraska's.

If Freddy fails(which won't happen), nobody will blame the Mayor. Pollard will be escorted out town for his failure.

Your an idiot, and also prob insane... ISU fans are the most loyal ever... what other fan base sets a record for season ticket sales after not making the NIT for 3 straight years? Nebraska? oops, nope.. o wait all huskers are blue jay fans when it comes to basketball because your program sucks... ISU football has never won a conference title in football and usually isnt very good, and still has continued to up season tickets and bring at least 40k to games as the 2nd football school in small state... you have no clue... ISU fans are loyal to a fault most the time...

Fred and Pollard will be run out of town in year 4 if they don't succeed. Hopefully it works and that doesn't happen.

What the hell? Husker Troll is posting in basketball threads now too? I doubt half the people in the state of Nebraska even know NU has a men's team. Most of them are KU fans or CU fans. Talk about loyal

How many other schools put 46,000 people into a 43,000 seat stadium to watch a 2-9 football team?

Shut the **** up. Remember Solich? What's Nebraska's bball attendance? Oh wait, you're probably a Creighton fan.

If there is so much loyalty, where were the sellout crowds at Jack Trice when Mac was in the hunt for Big 12 North football titles? I specifically remember walking up to JT on a 65 degree November evening a number of years ago when Colorado came to town with Iowa State very much in contention for a strong finish in the North (I'm a college football fan and wanted to see a good college football game on an incredible November evening) and not only getting in the stadium, but actually moving to the lower section at after halftime. Even during Iowa's struggles the past few years, fans were still pouring into Kinnick on Saturday afternoons.

Where was the loyalty when Dan McCarney was getting thrown under the bus after leading Iowa State to some of its most successful football seasons in the school's history?

Where was the loyalty (at the very least, to the players) when McDermott was going through his struggles and you could hear a pin drop at Hilton?

And where will the loyalty be if Fred Hoiberg doesn't get the job done in Ames? Legitimate question!

i think the op makes a very good point. and if it takes 4 more years of losing, they better be burned at the stake.

I'm kind of leery about the same thing as the OP. UNC went through the same thing with Matt Daugherty.

What happens if the Mayor doesnt work out? It'd be such a shame for his ISU legacy to be tainted...

You must not have lived anywhere else. Fickle fans don't turn out 35,000 people for a football game when we haven't been good in 10 years. They also don''t turn out 12,000 for basketball games when we haven't been good in 3-4 years. Get a clue man. This fan base is loyal as hell. Fickle and sometimes bitchy? Sure, but we are all loyal in the end.
