    Weather Models Inquiry

I'm throwing this in here in a flurry of new threads. But, I have been inquiring about which model is the most accurate when it comes to forecasting?

Attached is the link I always go to for information about when it is looking to rain next and the amount of rain but there are so many different runs that I don't know which is the most accurate.

    Meteogram Generator

Also, What time is noon on there? Is 00 UTC noon, or 06 UTC noon? I frequent this site daily on when we can expect rain on the jobsite and relatively how much. It has been a great tool to schedule trades around oncoming weather and total precip.

Thanks for your help and go clones!

ps I always watch the rain forecast so I'm wondering on most accurate between 12Z NAM, 12Z GFS, 18Z GFS, and 18Z NAM

Are you trying to tell us that his coaching hire has actually caused hell to freeze over?

Noon would be 18 UTC...though technically since it is now daylight time, 18 UTC is actually 1PM iowa time.

Better to stick to the 00 (6PM) and 12 (6 AM) UTC models as these correspond with the new information from balloon launches so they are more accurate.

As for the difference between NAM and GFS...NAM is supposed to be better once you're within 48 hours than GFS, but it varies from situation to situation.

NAM has higher resolution so the GFS will tend to "smear out" its precip over a larger area due to it being lower res, but since it has lower resolution, it can be run out farther into time.

Touche...but in the absence of a "nerd" cave we're going to keep trying to take over the main page

If you're feeling really ambitious, check out this link:

    Weather Models

Same models, just use the drop down on the link to set the time 0, 6, 12, or 18 Z for start time, and then select the model, NAM or GFS.
This will allow you to see the "big picture" of what is going on.

Keep in mind, even though the 0Z model is the 6PM model, it won't actually be online until 11PM or so, so you will typically need to load what appears to be a "6 hour old" model, if that makes sense.
