The thing is, all coaches have downsides.

Some have mid major head coaching experience but you have no idea how theyll manage at a high level.
Some have high level experience, but no head coaching experience, so you dont know how they'll manage a program of their own.
Some have pro experience but have never run a major college team, or college recruiting.
And some have all the above qualifications, but have some baggage in their personal life.

    Pick your poison.

If I had to guess, I would say ISU isn't showing the same interest as Billy is showing. I would like the hire though.
It's very possible the other two coaches don't want to be named at this time if they're currently employed.

still doesn't make sense if that was the case. are you saying that if those other two weren't coaching that it's normal or ok to reveal three people the day the position comes open? That would be a PR nightmare.

I've been surprised at how little I have heard his name this spring associated with other coaching searches. This is exciting to know he is interested in coming to Ames. He may be able to light a fire under Hilton Magic faster than anybody else because of his established name and recruiting connections.

Larry or Tim was one of the other people who called IMO. Who else has Gary's number just laying around and is following this story so closely? Or Gary is making up the fact people inquired besides Billy to make it seem like there's plenty of interest.

all i am saying is that given Pollard and his 'keeping things as quiet as possible' mantra...the fact that Billy G. has all ready been mentioned doesn't bode well. i would like the hire, but given the fact he's already been publicly mentioned i just don't see it happening.

Re: Billy Gillispe calls Gary Thompson...two others called him as well

    My take.

I am guessing that Gary Thompson acts as a liason for the university. People know to get in touch with him, and get an informal review of the situation.

It also makes it so certain coaches, who are probably under strictly written contracts, can contact somebody without contacting another university official. They get to talk about things, but don't have to worry about violating anything.

The phrase "have your people call my people" really does have meaning in certain areas of life.

Or Pollard wanted the name thrown out there to try to gauge what the public perception would be. He knows we want to win, but he probably is not sure how well received a risky hire such as Gillispie would go over.

No idea if that is true because what you said is completely consistent with how Pollard has handled previous searches. Just throwing out a possible scenario that seems to make sense.

I just read that one of Larry's incoming recruits this fall at Southern Miss is his oldest son, Hayden. Have to imagine this impacts his desire to leave in some capacity.

My thoughts on Billy G contacting ISU

I personally think it would be stupid for ISU to at least not INTERVIEW the guy. Look, it is going to be hard to find a coach at this point in the year and here we have a proven successful D-1 BCS coach showing interest in our program. I'm not sure there are any other candidates that fit that bill at this point.

Sure, he has some personal problems but that is why we should interview him and if JP and Geoffroy feels like he has taken necessary steps to fix his old habits or if Billy states that he will take the necessary steps than I say, why not? What do we have to lose by interviewing him? If JP and Geoffroy feel like his personal problems are going to continue and be a problem then I say do NOT hire him! But at least we would hear him out, it wouldn't hurt to show interest back. If we do not interview him or give him any consideration, then I will then be thoroughly disappointed! Look, at a school like ISU this late in the year and with the budget we have sometimes we will have to take risks. It's like when we take a risk on football JUCO talent with possible grade issues that the bigger schools pass up on.

Remember, he turned around UTEP 180 degrees in 2 seasons and had A&M in the NIT, NCAA 2nd Round and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in his only 3 seasons there! In his total head coaching experience he has had 4 NCAA appearances, 2 NIT appearances and only ONE year without postseason play and that was his first year with UTEP!

Billy Gillespie is our man for the job. He has been successful in the past in the big 12 and knows what it takes to win games. That is what Iowa State needs at this point...to win games! People dwell way too much on the past. He made mistakes yes, Lets put it behind us and give the guy another chance. I know that he wont fail us!

Let's get him on board. I really like watching the style of play he coaches, and he's got a reputation as a winner which always helps recruiting. I'd like to see ISU and Minnesota start playing each other each year and having two ex Kentucky coaches would make for a good story line.
