    TJ Otzelberger

I know there is another thread that just came up on TJ but I just wanted to show the difference between TJ and the other coaches we have had the last 4 years. IMO he is a big time coach.

I think it is crucial that we are able to keep TJ at Iowa State this year. He has been the one bright spot on the staff for the past 4 years. I was taking a look at rivals and who got credit for bringing in players to Iowa State. Here is how it looks....

    Otzelberger
    Mike Taylor
    Charles Boozer
    Craig Brackins
    Diante Garrett
    Justin Hamilton
    Dominique Buckley
    LA Pomlee
    Antwon Oliver
    Marquis Gilstrap
    Demarcus Phillips
    Melvin Ejim
    Eric McKnight
    Godfrey
    Elgin Cook

    McDermott
    Corey Mcintosh
    Wes Eikmeier?

    Rutter
    Dodie Dunson
    Lucca Staiger
    Clayton Vette
    Clinton Mann

    Prileou
    Wesley Johnson
    Marcus Brister

    Robinson
    Laron Dendy
    Chris Colvin

    Morgan's Staff
    Cory Johnson

TJ has brought in more players to ISU than all the other coaches combined. And the quality of the player he has brought in is much more impressive than the other coaches as well. I think if we want to be somewhat successful sooner rather than later it is crucial that we keep him around. Ejim, Phillips, and McKnight is a nice start and with TJ coming back you would think we would have no more transfers at all. Heck we may even be able to bring back a couple players like Hassell was saying.

    Re: TJ Otzelberger

That right there shows why TJ should get twice the pay to stick around, but that doesn't mean he should be HC. Certainly he needs to be a high priority.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Next year is a lost cause. I want assistants that work well with the next HC.

Edited to add Gilstrap. I was pretty sure he did but it didn't show on rivals

Did he bring in Railey too?

That was his job! He should have all those kids, he was the lead recruiter. He was not a very good recruiter for Iowa State if kids are talking about leaving when he does.

The fixes may be mostly in place: hope, change, new system, player relations, chemistry, and new start. Maybe it will be a win win for all earlier than we thought. WFC game will be a big one.

You are kidding yourself if you think kids go to schools now a days because of the school. It is about the coach 95% of the time

    2010 recruits
    Demarcus Phillips --
Melvin Ejim-- stays for sure with TJ, will evaluate next HC otherwise. (but would still consider ISU)
    Eric McKnight -- staying regardless

    2011 recruits
    Elgin Cook -
Of his recruits to date that have played here, 5 of 8 will probably be leaving prematurely for other reasons than going pro?

Of those that are coming for next year, how many will for sure drop if TJ doesnt stay?
For 2011, theres still time for the next staff..

    Re: TJ Otzelberger

I have nothing against Otz, but only 1 guy on that list (Gilstrap) used up his eligibility at ISU. Boozer and DG are on pace to I'll give, but the retainment rate still isn't that high.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

    Re: TJ Otzelberger

I don't think you make Otz a must stay for the new coach but you definitely make new hire aware of situation and make him aware that retaining him would help with keeping some recruits and current players.

    Re: TJ Otzelberger

I think that all three assistants should at the very least get an interview with the new HC. IMO Rutter will go to CU. That being said, I don't think that a new HC should be required to hire any of them. That's a recipe for disaster. TJ should be able to easily show his value, so the likelihood of him getting one of the spots is fairly high.

That too is a valid point. However, he at least got them to Ames - a place that isn't always easy to recruit these kids to.

Where do you get 5 out of 8? And I wouldn't be shocked if Hamilton stayed if TJ did. His issue seemed to be with Greg.

As for Ejim and McKnight. They are TJ or bust IMO
