    Coach Otz

Maybe this has already been covered, but...

It is pointless for us to sit and try and nominate our favorite head coaching candidates and then follow that up with who the assistants should be. That is a job for the incoming head coach, obviously. But it is becoming more and more evident that if there is any hope for the next 2-3 years not to be a complete train wreck, the new head coach will have to stick with Otz. If not, expect an Indiana and Tom Crean type situation with a less prestigious basketball school and a coach not as qualified as Crean.

    Re: Coach Otz

yep otz really does almost have to be here next year.. ejim said so himself pretty much

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

no one has to be here next year. We are terrible NOW. trying to hold onto what we have too much is pretty pointless. if it works into the new coaches plan, great. if not, well, i won't shed a tear that we are going a different direction than terrible.

    Re: Coach Otz

What's the guarantee Otz sticks around anyways? Assistants move on all the time, and Otz is certainly no exception, even if we retain him for 2010-2011, just as easily could move on then.

I can understand that point of view, but I honestly believe that Otz leaves for whatever reason compared to if he stays would be like setting the program back 2 years. I think it's that big of an impact.

Of our returners, how many have much of an option to leave? Most that had great options already transferred out..

    Re: Coach Otz

Look at how many guys he's brought to Ames that are here, and how many potential guys that will be here next year.

I would argue that anybody could leave, but circumstances would dictate for some making it less likely.

    Re: Coach Otz

I thought channel 13 reported that a member of the staff was going to Creighton with McDermott. I didn't catch who because the volume was down. Anyone know anything about that?

New coach would be smart to keep him atleast one year if not two even if he doesn't want him.

Erik Crawford. He is no longer on the coaches page on the AD website.

    Re: Coach Otz

Two things are going to happen:

    1. Coach Otz will be given a shot at the head coaching position, either pernamently or on an interim basis.

    2. He leaves to join McDermott at Creighton.

He won't stay as someone else's assistant at ISU.

The question lies ... will the risk of losing existing players and current recruits outweigh the risk of hiring an inexperienced coach.

I think he leaves for Creighton. He said it before ... he owes Greg McDermott a lot, maybe too much, the job security of following McDermott to Creighton gives him time to further his resume and pursue his goal of being a head coach.

    Re: Coach Otz

I think I am ready for Nurse to become the next head coach here. He can keep otz on the staff, along with grayer, and the other assistant job he can get his guy. I know we all want new blood in the program, but nurse is new blood and otz is the guy that is responsible for the team having any talent what so ever. I really think this is the best of both worlds. Pay nurse 750,000, im sure that is at least quadruple what he was getting for the energy, and pay otz 200,000 or something. I know the numbers are probably off, but i think this would be best for the near future of isu basketball.

This is the most important mbb hire since orr without a doubt.

    Re: Coach Otz

On the flip side a new coach will have the opportunity to bring in his own players. That is probably more appealing to a prospective coach then being saddled with a roster that would take several years to turn over.

We may have a thin roster next season, but we need to think long term not short term. A new coach is going to have an opportunity to recruit a large number of players that fit his system in the fall of next year. We may suffer some short term difficulties, but we will have a more stable foundation in the long run.

Furthermore, if the new coach is a good recruiter, he should be able to retain our current players.

As was the case with Paul Rhoads we need the new coach to surround himself with the right staff. That is far more important than short term fixes.
