    NFL Draft

Just around the bend now...32 teams will do their best to improve upon their franchises, for '07 and beyond. War rooms get heated and needs sometimes are forgotten when a trade is dangled in front of the eyes or a want seems more popular. Teams have gone from cellar-dwellers to contenders based on a great draft and conversely - good teams have shot themselves in the foot for foolish moves.

What once was another weekend of NFL transactions continues to grow into a national spectacle where fans show up in there team's apparel - either cheering or booing their team's picks. Undoubtedly, for each pick - you can expect both to emit from the crowd.

So...who is your team and what do you expect to see in the first day? Biggest needs and will they be met.

    Also...who's going number one?

I'm just watching to see how badly Houston can screw it up this year.

    Re: NFL Draft

I think Russell is almost a done deal at #1.

As for my team (the Bears), they haven't drafted anyone flashy since taking Rex Grossman. It's been defense, defense, defense. And it has paid off. I'm not sure which direction the Bears will go as they don't have any super-glaring holes to fill. Depth is always important but you typically aren't drafting your first and second round picks to be backups.

I'd like to see them take a WR...although their receiving corps had a good year, will that continue into next year? Moose is solid and it looks like Berrian is ready to take the next step. Hopefully Bradley will sure up his hands.

They may also look at a corner which would be good as well.

I did too...until yesterday. Was listening to Dan Patrick on my way back from lunch. Talked about how the Raiders seemed to be shifting focus to Calvin. Rumors are the Raiders have not been able to agree to anything with Russell. Rumors also were floating that the Raiders were tossing ideas around about different veteran QB's.

Now, this could be a ploy to get Russell to realize he may not go #1 and come down on his demands. Or it could be serious. Either way, it should be interesting.

For my Cowboys, I'd like to see them address one of three areas...

    Pass rushing DE
    Offensive linemen
    Receiver

I think they will take Calvin and use Moss to make a trade for a middle of the pack veteran QB.

    Re: NFL Draft

I heard on the radio that Quinn is lobbying very hard for someone to take him #1. And I also heard that no one is biting as he was less than spectacular at the combines.

I hadn't heard that. Passing up someone because of contract negotiations isn't a good thing...just ask the Texas about last year.

PS. Tickets for the Bears/Cowboys game go on sale to the public in late July per the bears website.

The real question is all the other picks! All I know is I'll be glued to the TV for two days straight.

    Re: NFL Draft

I think the Raiders acquire a veteran QB by trade and draft Calvin Johnson. They send Randy Moss and his baggage to the Packers for a third-rounder in a draft day trade.

The Packers select Cal RB Marshawn Lynch in Round 1.

I know the Packer pick isn't going out on a limb, but they badly need a RB given Ahman's FA defection, and the draft class (of RB's) appears too shallow to wait past the first round.

It is a bad thing, yet a neccessary evil part of the business. If you can't sign a guy or he's forcing you to put in jepordy the financial future of your franchise, what is a team to do?

Draft is similar to free agency in that respect. You may want to sign the best free agent (pick any position) available, however - your cap space and such don't always allow you to do that.

These top few picks are demanding more and more money. And...for what? What's the return been on #1/#2 picks in the history of the NFL in relation to other picks in the first day (or even the 2nd day)? NFL teams are realizing the top couple picks carry about as much risk - if not moreso - than reward.

I don't think I'm going to be able to go. That weekend in Week 2 of my games that I coach. Unless we have a bye that week (unlikely to have a bye at all), it won't work out.

Its funny, out hear there's talk of the Broncos trading up to number two if Calvin Johnson isn't taken by the Raiders. I think it will be one of the more interesting drafts I've seen in a while. It's been difficult to predict.

I can't wait for that. Day 1 should be very interesting. I hope there is a scramble of trades and some big moves.
