    If....

If, as expected, GMac leaves for Creighton today, that will mean that the longest tenure any coach has had since Johnny Orr was LE with a whopping five seasons.

Five seasons....wow. Whoever our next coach is (if McD does leave) will hopefully be the next Johnny Orr, at least in terms of how long he stays with us. You cannot become a consistently good, NCAA-tournament worthy program when you are keeping your coaches an average of four seasons (which has been our average since JO).

Whoever it is needs to be a great hire for us and someone who's going to be for the long haul.

I wouldn't care if the next guy stayed only one season if he took us to the tourney and signed a good class that stayed.

I just want somebody that's credible and can win. Really, that's what it comes down to. Retaining the guy is another thing. Good coaches are going to move up in the world, it's just a matter of time. That being said, bad coaches move down *cough* McDermott*cough*

But that's the rub though. Iowa State isn't Kansas, North Carolina, or Kentucky where we have the tradition to be able to just plug in a coach and still have great success from coaching change to coaching change.
