How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

In light of the fact that since 1889 only 22 people that have played Iowa HS football have went on to become NCAA DI First Team All Americans in college...how important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

Some of these 22 have been quite notable...Elmer Layden (I believe one of the Four Horsemen at ND) and Jay Berwanger (the first Heisman winner from the University of Chicago).

Since 1980 there have been 10 such players honored. Most have went to Iowa (Roby, Cook, Dwight, DeVries, Clark, Gallery, Kaeding) for college. Hennings went to Air Force and Alberts went to Nebraska. Our only First Team AA from the state since 1980 was Mike Busch in 1989.

    What say you??

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

    1. We need to get the best players we can, wherever they're from.

    2. There is a benefit to giving a recruiting edge to in-state players. Local kids bring local support; greater local fan and media interest; and hs coach affinity which leads to better relations for future recruiting.

As our program becomes recognized as a mature, competitive program we ought to strive to get at least half of the top tier kids in the state, whether they develop into AA's or not.

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

I believe alot of current Iowa fans were made during the 1980's when Hayden Fry would get alot of Iowa kids on the team. They had great success with OL and DL kids that they grew into 270lb to 290lb solid players. I know I cheered for Iowa because they had kids on the team that I played against or came from the same conference. Go back to the mid 70's and there was probably a higher percentage of ISU fans in the State because of the success of the Stensrud boys from Lake Mills and Tom Randall from Mason City. I think you need to have some local kids playing to get the casual fan to become interested.

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

I think that you need to take a hard look at Iowa kids every year, so that you have the relationships well developed with local coaches. If you can get 3 to 6 of the best kids in the state every year, you will have a good chance at the outstanding ones when they come along. Just because a kid is far away doesn't mean they are better. But sheer numbers dictate that the coaches will have to fill the bulk of the roster with kids from Texas, Florida and other states.

It's not a huge thing but Iowa players are cheaper too. (in-state vs. out-of-state tuition

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

not important at all. If this were California, Texas or Florida, then obviously yes, but why restrict yourself to prioritizing your recruiting within a state that obviously can't compete with the talent available elsewhere. I'd much rather have a great recruiting class with 0 in-staters, then have an average class with the best from iowa being in that group. sorry, gotta tell it like it is.

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

No question in my mind. It is very important to get the best athletes from the state of Iowa to come to ISU. As mentioned above, local support, better statewide involvement and more fans.

I once listened to Hayden Fry being interviewed. He said ;this is the key to dominating a rivalry with in-state opponents.

A great recruiting class will include iowans just not an entire roster of iowans. Any of these Iowa boys ring a bell?

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

I think it is important because they are more likely to stick around. They have a better support system if within the state which IMO would lead to better grades, behavior off the field/court and not be homesick. (How many times have you heard a player leaving to be closer to home?)

I also think that a State institution has the responsibility to recruit at home first if they can. I know the athletic department is "separate" from the school but is still a state sponsored institution.

Its of zero importance. We need the best players we can get, if they are from Iowa, so be it. The argument that it increases fan support and media support is absolutely ridiculous. Winning is what creates support, period.

I would gladly give up most of these guys for some of Texas's or Oklahoma's best or possibly a Florida guy. Bret Meyer and Todd Blythe are the rare exception of talent in Iowa. The state of Iowa on average maybe produces 3 at the most that will make an impact on an NCAA football roster. Meyer and Blythe are the only ones on that list that have done anything to speak of. Scales hasn't stayed healthy yet, Culbertson is great when there is absolutely zero pressure on, Arnaud hasn't stepped foot on a gameday field yet, Barkema is an average TE at best, Schmeling was part of the worst O-line in the nation last year, and Moses hasn't done all that much either.
Fact is recruit Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida the hardest and grab the occasional stud out of Iowa.

Re: How important is it to recruit Iowa HS players?

It's important only if they are the best players we can get...if this was say even worse than the state of iowa for talent...let's say IDK...IDAHO. Then of course there would be NO importance. You can look at all the good and great players we've had from iowa, but let's face it: we are no national powerhouse...if we WERE, then we'd be able to get all great players from the big football states like Florida, Texas, Cali, etc. and would obviously have no need for iowa hs recruits who just don't compete with the talent of the other kids. But bcuz we are a middle team in the big 12 looking to get into the upper part, we need those recruits and the best damn recruits we can get - WHEREVER they are from.

ajjohnson is completely right about the support part, it has no effect on it whatsoever: winning creates support, most of the people on here are fanatics for the Cyclones...but its a lot easier for the rest of the people to root for a team that is constantly in big 12 championship games rather than one who is inconsistent and goes to bowl games sporatically.

Right.....cause Fred Hoiberg didn't increase fan support for basketball?
