    Looking for info on Spain

I'm going to be heading there for a couple weeks in Aug/Sept for my honeymoon.

Looking for places to visit and see while I'm there. I know we are going to Barcelona, Mallarca, Granada, Seville, and Madrid.
    I appreciate any info.

    Thanks

Re: Looking for info on Spain

Spain is awesome, i loved every minute there so much culture and changes between different parts of the country. Madrid was my favorite, but i didn't get the chance to go to Barcelona and have heard great things.

My advice is to always be in a good pair of walking shoes. Lots of walking, i actually enjoyed it. Also, dinner isn't till like 9 or so, and the night life peaks around 3 am and won't close to the sun comes up. Good times. Congrats and enjoy yourself.

Madrid was great, however Seville was awesome! any white town you can pass through on your way to Marbella on the Mediteranian and take in some toppas. You'll have a great time. Spent 2 weeks there, could barely speak any spanish (was visiting a good friend, he spoke for me).

A friend brought me a shot glass from Oviedo once, so that place must be pretty cool.

    Check your frommers.

Definitely visit the Monument des Poissonieres, frommers says its very moving.

Also, if you get the chance, make your way over to bratislava, now that its springtime. In the winter it can get very depressing.

Re: Looking for info on Spain

I spent two months living in Spain last summer. I was in Valencia (the third-largest city, about two hours south of Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast) for most of the time, but spent about a week in Madrid and had a brief trip to Barcelona.

Barcelona: Hike up Montjuic, the mountain in the middle of the city. There's a public park at the top, with a rock monument that you can climb up for a spectacular view of the city. The park is great for a picnic meal. Also: Sagrada Familia. SEE IT. It will blow your mind into a billion tiny pieces. I spent three hours just walking around the outside of it.

Madrid was an excellent place; it's Europe's version of Des Moines. It's a major city with a lot to offer, and is the capital, but is fairly small compared to Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, and so on. The locals are wonderful, the shopping is excellent, public transit is very usable (metros in Spain tend to be extensive) but rarely even necessary, as you can walk anywhere if you're not in a hurry- and you shouldn't be! The monuments and buildings listed in most guidebooks or articles are indeed worth seeing. I particularly recommend the public gardens/park outside the royal opera house, around sunset. It's beautiful at that time of day. Make sure you visit the Almudena national cathedral- it was just completed two years ago or so, and has a very beautiful modern interior. Visit Plaza Mayor, but don't eat at any of the restaurants there. (Tip in general- the further away from main roads you get, the cheaper the restaurants get, and the more authentic they get.) El Prado and Reina Sofia are two excellent art museums. El Prado is an easy walk from Plaza Mayor, and the surrounding area is beautiful, with a lot to do. Madrid is also a great home base for day trips. Toledo, Salamanca, and Segovia are all excellent cities to take visits to.

I would be remiss to not put in a plug for Valencia. I lived there for nearly two months, going to school at one of the universities downtown. I've traveled extensively in Europe, and not only is Spain my favorite place to be, but Valencia is the best city I've ever been to. It's gorgeous, it's loaded with every imaginable kind of entertainment and pastime, it has its own unique culture separate from most of Spain, and I could keep going on. It is a truly wonderful city. It's easily accessible by train, so I definitely recommend spending at least a few days there!

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
