Had 1 really cool one I still talk to, and 2 complete douchebags who I understood why no one would room with them.

    Re: Random roomate

My first one was a complete slob...I moved out as soon as the online system would allow. The guy I moved in with was random too and very normal. Kept to himself so I don't know what ever happened to him.

    Re: Random roomate

    1 For 2.

1st was completely anti-social. Didn't leave the room or go out. Went to bed at nine and was up at six every day. Got ****** at me one day when I came back at ten and got on my computer to do homework, despite being quite.

Next semester had a real good roommate that I actually grew up not to far from. Everything worked out good.

Guess this doesn't even include my registered roommate my freshman year who was very open about his sexual orientation via facebook. Decided against that before I came down here though.

Mostly a crap shoot. Although most of my friends have had pretty good luck I think.

    Re: Random roomate

Dorm one dropped out to max out credit cards and get drunk. He was a nice enough guy, but not one I'd really fit with. When he dropped out, it made it a lot easier to get stuff done.

Random ones in apartments were usually a good fit in terms of study work and humor. Made good friends that way. One was a little out there, but he was kind of a caricature of the engineer personality. He was fun, just a little full of himself.

    Re: Random roomate

One I had a lot in common with interests wise (music, tv, and such, but he wasn't a sports fan), but we had entirely different personalities (he's more of an extrovert, I'm more of an introvert). But we got a long pretty well, and he's one of my closer friends. Another who had a very similar personality, but he practically lived at his girlfriend's place. We would have been great friends if we saw eachother more often. And another that I maybe had one conversation with each week. Completely different people with absolutely nothing in common. We don't hate eachother, but we're not friends.

As long as you respect eachother's differences and neither of you are a complete *******, I don't see any reason for any problems.

    Re: Random roomate

I only had one, my freshman year, but we got along just fine. We don't talk anymore, but not because we didn't like each other. Just had different friends/interests.

    Re: Random roomate

I have had three, two freshmen year one this year. My first one always wanted a single room so he moved to an empty double after a couple of weeks (he ended up getting a roommate at semester). I also got a new roommate at semester...from China, other than the fact that he is from southern china had the heat all the way up and bought an humidifier so I felt like I was living in a rain forest it wasn't that bad. I did have to teach him a lot about America though. This year I have a great random roommate, we don't talk much because I'm hardly ever there but when we are both there we get along great.

I had a terrible roommate so I moved in with my friend at semester because his old roommate dropped out. Lets just say that the kid never left the room.

    Re: Random roomate

My random roommate from my freshman year turned into one of my best friends. We lived together in the dorms for 3 years and then lived together in an apartment our senior year. 9 years later, we are still great friends and have traveled together about once a year including 2 week trips to Italy and Ireland.

So I was very, very lucky.

    Re: Random roomate

I had 2. When I lived in the dorms, my policy was to not room with someone I was already friends with. One I didn't really like, but we didn't have any conflicts. Just never really talked, and had completely different circles of friends. The other was a cool guy, and we got along great, but he was out of Ames showing cattle literally every weekend, which was really, really nice when I "made friends" out at a party.

My last 3 years in Ames I lived off campus with guys I was good friends with in the dorms, so we had been in close quarters for a while, and it was usually smooth, until we caught one of the guys stealing from everybody. He got the boot pretty quick. God bless individual leases.

The plus about random roomates is that there's no potential to destroy a previous friendship, and it there's none of that friendship baggage that can complicate living arrangements. The downside, is they might be completely incompatible with you or a gigantic d bag.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

    Re: Random roomate

My random roommate my freshman year was okay. We hung out and talked during freshman year. I haven't talked to him since. Not a bad guy, but we didn't really have anything in common. Like others have said its just chance.

    Re: Random roomate

My roomate my freshman year was from Madrid (IA). He rarely stayed in our dorm instead he drove back and forth everyday from his parents house. Which didn't make sense having a dorm room.

He was very rude and hated when I had someone over to study or just to hang out. He always got pissy and leave for his parents.

He finally moved out about the time second semester rolled around. I came home from a party one night to find him and a friend of his on MY COMPUTER looking up gay porn. I made some rude comment before passing out and I never saw him the rest of the year. He moved out one weekend while I went back home and never saw him since.
