Time To Come Together: An Alternate Viewpoint.

Now that we're going into Year 5 of the McDermott Era at Iowa State, I feel that it is important for the fanbase to come together in support of Iowa State Athletics. We need to speak with ONE unified voice that 18 wins might be a good result for 2 seasons of conference play, but it is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for 4 seasons. We need to make it clear to the ISU Athletic Department that while we will still continue to cheer for the ISU Cyclones, no one coach embodies Iowa State University. Our Coaches are caretakers of a legacy that is MUCH bigger than they are as an individual, and none of them should be under ANY illusions that should push come to shove, we WILL choose the school over the coach every time. And while we're at it, it wouldn't hurt to remind them that Administrative Positions are not bigger than the Athletic Department as a whole.

We need to speak with ONE voice and deliver the message that blaming dissatisfied fans & message board "negativity" for recruiting "misses" is a loser move, and it will not be tolerated if you wish to remain in the employment of Iowa State University. We should remind those who would talk about the poor character of this generation that sweeping generalities regarding an entire generation of individuals is intellectually lazy. People who speak of the deficits of this current generation of players typically just got their butts kicked by a better team...who is made up of the SAME generation of players.

We need to let the players know that we appreciate their choice to attend Iowa State, but that we will NOT accept mediocrity from their team or their leaders. We should recognize that the finished product on the court or field is a hybrid of the desire/talent/effort of the players and the leadership of their coaches. Good players can overcome a poor coach & give you an adequate product, but it's much harder to do than it is for a good coach to mold average players into an above average team.

We need to realize that someone who says something negative about our favorite program is not always trying to tear it down. If negative aspects of the program exist, they cannot be fixed until they are brought to the attention of those who have the will AND the ability to fix them. Shooting the messenger just leaves you with a big pile of dead messengers - the message stays the same.

But what happens if the dead horse you're trying to kill stays dead? There are more than a few causes for our recent swoon and many have been over-extended as to their importance. At the heart of it, JP has publicly expressed his displeasure, GMac has publicly stated his frustration and his accountability, there has been an extensive staff shake-up, the team will be completely new next year.... The horse is dead. GMac will be coach here next year. We will field a complete squad next year. There are players who want to be part of big-time basketball and he have playing time to offer. We suddenly have new recruiting ties and names will surface that nobody has heard of or contemplated, we will have a new offensive set with Nurse working on that side... And we will still have the overwhelming numbers of Hilton/ISUBball faithful that will fill the seats to keep us on a top 30 list of home attendance. We will continue to get more and more NCC members and other donors due to the work of JP and his staff. We will still have amazing ambassadors of ISU athletics like BF and CPR and yes - even the lowly GMac. Horse = dead. Beating = still dead. Whining - see horse and beating in the previous quasi-sentence.

and I see this as you trying to divide the fan base. The other post that this is coping didn't say anything about McDermott and whether he should stay or not. That poster realizes what you can't seem to get though your head, McDermott is here and he is not leaving at least until the end of next season.

So instead of trying to create hatred and dis-support, why not come together and support the team that is left. You can be as bitter as you want after McDermott fails again, but why beat a dead horse? We know the facts, continuing to pound the issue is only going to prove that you have too much time on your hands. Nothing is going to change until next spring, you know it, I know it, we all know it.

Honestly, given the guys that were actually moving around this year, I'm coming to the conclusion that standing pat isn't our worst move for this upcoming season. I'm really not seeing anyone outside of McCaffrey that would have gotten me excited.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Mac is probably here until next spring. But if we wait until next spring to let the AD know that the state of the program is unacceptable, we might end up stuck in the same situation a year from now. The point needs to be made NOW that the failure of this program will no longer be tolerated. Don't let this year's mistake drag on for multiple years.

How is about Uniting a Fan Base

Every fan has the right to express their opinion. But to post things like we need make demands and let President Geoffrey, Jamie Pollard, Greg McDermott and even the players know the program is bigger than they are and WE as Cyclone fans will not accept mediocrity is pretty laughable.

Do you think GG, JP, GMac, any player on the current roster or even fans who understand why GMAC is still the coach are happy with the level that we have won over the past few years? Everyone involved knows the score. There is no need to come on this or any other board just about daily to act like you are some visionary and have been wronged by JP or GMAC.

If you aren't happy with ISU hoops- don't buy tickets. Stay away, that is your right. But don't paint your actions as some type of heroic or highly principled stance. If you want to do that, go protest against world hunger or the war!

The reality is GMAC will be our coach next year. The reality is GMAC has one year to make things right. Don't read too much into Nick Nurse getting a 2 year deal. That is financial security for Nick and allowed ISU to attract a quality assistant coach. Not a guarantee that GMAC has 2 or 3 more years to win at ISU.

I'm going to buy my hoops season ticket next fall, because Iowa State is the name on the front of the jersey.

If you believe the same site that says McD has gotten a guarantee of a couple years, not only has Nurse been given the same guarantee, but a nice sized buyout with it as well.

Accepting bad basketball and believing that decisions are final and that change cannot happen -- is a defeatist's attitude. Change will happen, it is inevitable, why not now? I love my school enough to speak up when things are not right. MBB is not right. The last 4 years has clearly shown that we need a new leader. Yes, it is my opinion but it is just as valid as any others and it does not make me a bad cyclone.
