Don't look now, but the Brewers are in 1st...

I had to post this because, as a lifetime Brewers fan (since the mid 70s), it has been a pretty lean time. I take my victories when they come. BTW, this post is in no way dissing the Cubs faithful (Brewers won last nite in a 5-4 comeback). I actually like the Cubs, except when they play the Brewers.

Anyway, I have yet to meet a native Iowan who is also an avid Brewers fan! So, if there are any of you out there, what do you think of this year's Brew Crew? It's early, but for the first time in over a decade, I actually think they have all the pieces to win the division and get to the playoffs!

I think the Central is pretty weak and if they can stay healthy *ahem*Sheets*ahem* I wouldn't be surprised to see them come out of the division. The Cardinals look beat up and old, the Astros now have my scorn for trading Tavarez, the Reds probably don't have the pitching, Pirates... well, you know. The Cubs are already off to their normal cubs like start and Prior had "exploratory surgery" again today.

    Crazier things have happened.

Re: Don't look now, but the Brewers are in 1st...

The Cubs, I believe, have the most talent up and down the line-up. They also have the best Runs Scored vs Runs Against stat in that division. While that is not the most reliable stat in predicting division winners, there tends to be a good correlation between the two. Last year, Houston looked like they were going to be middle of the pack at best - even later in the season. However, I told a buddy of mine to look at the Astro's RS to RA stat. There was a pretty significant difference between RS and RA, I told him that sooner or later they'd end up winning those close games and would be in the thick of things. Sure enough, they were.

The Brewers have scored more runs than opponents, but their margin of difference in RS vs RA is not as high as the Cubs. I think if the Cubs start playing better fundamental ball, they will be a major threat to the Brewers!

Never use April stats to project out over 162 games. April stats are misleading, for a lot of reasons.

Re: Don't look now, but the Brewers are in 1st...

Cubs are frustrating right now because they keep losing 1 run and extra inning games. The pitching has been pretty good but the offense has just not been consistent enough to win those close games. They also have some problems with sticking to a lineup because they have log jams in the OF and 2B and SS to some extent too. With Soriano back and in LF and Pie to stay in CF Jones, Murton, and Floyd are competing for time in RF. If they trade Jones that helps the OF situation some. Theriot has been great but he's blocked at 2B by DeRosa who also can play some RF but there are now 3 guys there already. Cedeno and Izturis seem to trade off at SS and neither are hitting well but Cedeno has came up clutch with a few hits and might be slightly better defensively but neither are going to help with the bat much.

The rotation may get a boost next week when Guzman is called up to take Wade Miller's spot. Zambrano looked better last night and Hill, Lilly, and Marquis have been really good so far. Minus Ohman and Eyre in the pen and the bullpen has been very good too. Hopefully they can get it figured out here and put some win streaks together because the talent is there.

If I were a Brewers fan I'd be feeling good as well but leading the NL Central is a little like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.

That may be true but winning it will still get you into the playoffs...and then we all know that anything can happen.

They're just setting up a more dramatic run for the series.
