National champion Perry (Hawk wrestler) arrested for public intoxication

    DMR link

National wrestling champion Mark Perry of Iowa was arrested this morning for public intoxication, according to the Iowa City Police Department’s daily arrest blotter.

Perry, 22, was arrested at 12:56 a.m. near the intersection Iowa and Muscatine avenues after officers were called to investigate an individual yelling profanities in the middle of the street, according to Sgt. Troy Kelsay of the Iowa City Police Department.

The junior won the 165-pound NCAA and Big Ten Conference championships last season, and on April 14 received the school’s Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler award.

“The coaching staff will investigate the matter and handle it appropriately,” Iowa sports information director Phil Haddy said this morning.

Perry’s blood-alcohol content was .200, according to the incident report. In the state of Iowa, you are presumed intoxicated when you have a level at or above .08.

The report also said Perry “was singing and rambling” in the back of the patrol car.

Well, at least none of our players have been arrested and sang on their way back to the slammer.

Something is in the water in both Ames and Iowa City.

    And, it stinks...

That "something" in the water is called alcohol. It's also in the water at every college campus.

At least the kid wasn't driving...

This is getting old. Is it just a change in peoples behaviors lately, or is it that the media is no longer hiding the troubles that athletes get into in college. It did not ever seem this bad. And is this a nation wide trend or just ISU & Iowa that are having all kinds of police troubles.

Nothing is different than normal. College kids have always got in trouble, but with message boards and the race to cover anything that resembles "news" in the generic media, everything is a story.
Talk to anyone who played ball in the 90's 80's 70's and yes, probably even the 60's and they can tell you some GREAT stories of guys getting into trouble.

'True dat' - damn message boards! I blame the moderators for letting this stuff just snowball.

Re: National champion Perry (Hawk wrestler) arrested for public intoxication

I'm not blaming it on the message boards per se, but stuff before that would have just been in the local paper is no all over the news. I think since everyone then finds out about it, coaches are forced to make a tough decision, whereas before it could (and was) easily swept under the rug.

Re: National champion Perry (Hawk wrestler) arrested for public intoxication

Unfortunately this type of stuff has been going on for decades. It is just that back in the 70's and 80's the coaches wer much better at being able to keep things hushed up. I know of some stud players at ISU that were thrown in jail during the 70's for running over dozens of newly planted trees on campus. They got out within hours when the coach showed up and they agreeded to buy new trees. Nothing else happened. Can you imagine that happening today? It would be on the message board in no time.

Or maybe it's just that he realized that having won as a wrestler for the Hawkeyes, he had nowhere else to go in life, all of his career paths were closed, and so he decided to drown his sorrows in a brown bottle.

Too bad he got arrested, but did anyone notice how cocky he was after he won his match? Before he thanked people, he went around with his arms up bringing glory to himself.
