    Athletic Department Budget Issues

The following are things that I think most on this site agree on:

+ GM is a 'great guy'.

+ Our budget is on the lower end of Big 12 schools.

+ We are somewhat finanically 'strapped' with our athletic budget.

+ GM's record at ISU...especially Big 12 record...is, shall we say, not very good.

+ We could not 'afford' to buy out GM after this past season to upgrade our MBB HC situation.

+ The hiring of Jeff Grayer as an assistant renews optimism for many...especially in the 40+ crowd.

+ Johnny Orr brought Jeff Grayer into the ISU family and is the father of Cyclone MBB in the modern era.

With all of these issues being nearly universally agreed upon by all I want to encourage GM to "do the right thing" and pay for Grayer's salary out of his own pocket (and Nurse's for that matter). I also believe he should personally fund the permanent recognition of JO via statue or whatever is mutually agreed upon.

There is precedence for this type of thing...look at what Sean Payton did...to get Greg Williams as his DC before last season...he agreed to pay a portion of the salary it was going to take to make it happen out of his own pocket.

Come on Greg, show us what a great guy you are and do the right thing.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    Re: Athletic Department Budget Issues

Sean Payton makes $8 million per year....250K for gregg williams isn't that big a deal and he saints reimbursed him later in the year. On a percentage basis, assuming GMac makes 900k, that be like him chipping in 27k.

I'm not sure why GMac should give up 250k due to "budget" concerns....that's a rounding error on a 48M budget.

I think you should pay me for reading that awful post. My going rate is about 20 bucks an hour, and I spent about 30 seconds reading it and another 2 and a half minutes digesting the pure stupidity of it. If my math is correct, you owe me a dollar.

I am surprised he did not instead also ask what the travel recruiting budget will be since no one essentially signed for he spring period and that should come out of the pocket also.

I remember reading something recently that GMac actually reallocated some of his salary to cover raises for his assistants? Does anyone remember seeing that?

    Re: Athletic Department Budget Issues

GMac already took a hit in his salary once to bump his assistants. I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same again to get Nurse specifically. Grayer probably wasn't too expensive.

There you have it. He is willing to give up some of his salary to help his assistants salaries be competitive. He has done it once before.

    Happy?

Yes...just mentioned the same thing. He has already done it.

    OP has done little research.

Where does Johnny Orr fit into this even a little? Should each of our coaches have recognized Johnny Orr in some way?

The premise of what I think is the main point of this argument is flawed because GM has helped pay his assistants out of his own salary, but I get at least where you're going with that. I don't see how JO fits in at all, though, except that you seem to like him personally. We've had other Cyclone greats (Hoiberg, Barry Stevens, etc.) - does each coach need to get them statues, too?

Maybe Johnny Orr needs to help pay for the extra salaries. And we could ask LE, WM,TF and others to chip in. Whew?
