    23andme DNA testing

I saw that 23andme.com is having a pretty good sale today:

23andMe DNA Testing [TODAY ONLY 4/23] $99 + shipping for Complete Edition - SlickDeals.net Forums

Has anyone done anything like this? As long as you aren't concerned about privacy, it sounds like it would be fun to try if you have $100 laying around.

    Re: 23andme DNA testing

It sounds interesting but are they a reputable company? Is there a license or certification or something they have to get?

    Re: 23andme DNA testing

It is legit. It is more than $100 unless you are already diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. There is a code to enter then and you can do it for $25. The founder of Google is concerned about the disease and gave a grant for people with Parkinson's Disease.

Here is the link to the message board at the National Parkinson Foundation.

Please have any one you know get this test as it is one possible way a treatment for this disease may be found. I have a personal interest in it as my wife has had the disease for nine years now and is 45 years old. Thanks for spreading the word.

They certainly seem reputable...I've read about them in the past (without searching for them), and investors include Google and Genetech. Not sure about the licensing part. I believe 23andme is just a portal, they don't do the actual testing, there are some labs that handle that.

They keep your DNA info in their database for awhile, although it's supposedly not attached to your name.

For whatever reason I interpreted 23andme as DNA testing to see if you were related to Michael Jordan...

You are not alone in that train of thought...I thought maybe it was about seeing if you have the genetic dispostion to be a superstar.

I think there would be more interest in seeing if one is related to Wilt.

I haven't done 23andMe, but I have done National Geographic's Genographic project. It's only Ancestry but it's really cool.

It's also $99.95 everyday, not just one
