More like, the Big 12 should be proactive and poach TCU and Utah.

I agree, I'm just looking at worst case.

I'd personally like the Big 12 to go for Cincy and Louisville. Bigger TV markets/fan bases. TCU brings nothing in that regard, as we already have DFW.

Cincy and Louisville would be great additions. Expand into some Big TV markets. To bad we have a total pud whacker as a Big 12 Commish.

I'm sure the B12 will make some brilliant move like adding TCU and Houston.

If we add another Texas school I might puke.

If Texas bolts there will be some schools left in the lurch with us, not just ISU. The Big Ten and SEC can't absorb everyone. Some Big 12 North teams added to the Mountain West would still be a strong conference, imo.

For quite some time now, I have advocated that the remaining Big 12 schools put something together with members of the Mountain West should the conference get raided. If you look at things geographically, especially teams like Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State appear to be a good fit in a conference that includes some of the Mountain West. If Texas and Texas A & M go somewhere else (to which I would say good riddance...the Big 8 never should have dropped their drawers to these schools anyway), I would hope the remaining conference schools go after the top tier schools from the Mountain West. I would think Utah, BYU and Texas Christian would be good additions.

Think of a 16-team conference that looked like this:

    Nebraska
    Iowa State
    Colorado
    Colorado State
    Wyoming
    Air Force
    Kansas
    Kansas State
    Oklahoma
    Oklahoma State
    Utah
    BYU
    New Mexico
    TCU
    Texas Tech
    Baylor

Other options might include going after Utah State to give Utah another natural in-conference rivalry or even New Mexico State (to give New Mexico a natural in-state rivalry). Another possibility would be Houston (although I wouldn't want to get too many Texas schools involved for obvious reasons...they seem to like things "their" way).

There are a lot of options out there, but I contend that a football conference that included Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Utah, TCU and BYU would be as strong as any conference out there (of course all bets are off, depending on what the SEC and Big 10 + 1 decide to do). The fly in the ointment could possibly be Oklahoma and Oklahoma State running off somewhere together.

Re: Mountain West Making Strides toward Automatic BCS Bid

Ok, here's my worst case scenario.

Big Ten goes to 16: adding 3 Big East teams, Notre Dame, and Mizzou.
SEC goes to 16: adding Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and OSU.
Pac-10 goes to 14: adding Utah, BYU, Colorado, and Boise St.

I really don't see Nebraska going to the Big Ten, and that's kind of what would hold this thing together. A Big 12/Mountain West remnants conference would look like this:

    Nebraska
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    Kansas State
    Colorado State
    Air Force
    New Mexico
    Baylor
    Texas Tech

Not so bad, maybe even an AQ conference with the demise of the Big East as a football conference and Nebraska still in the fold.

I honestly wouldn't mind that conference. It's no less AQ worthy than the modern Big East or ACC.

And really, if the bigwigs in Texas pull the same crap on the SEC that they did when the Big XII was formed, maybe we'd get to keep OU and OSU instead of Tech and Baylor, which would definitely be a strong conference, with a definite Big 8 throwback vibe.

Holy crap, how many of these anti-Texas bring back the Big 8 comments can we have on this board? Can't any of you people open your eyes to what is going on in college sports today and connect it back to why the good ole days of the Big 8 are gone?

Major college sports today are driven by big money, and the big money comes from TV deals. Why do you think the Big 10 is the center power player in this conference mix up? Because the have the most TV dollars to throw around. Why? Because they conference footprint covers the largest population.

Why do you think the Big 8 needed to add the Texas schools, and why do they have so much power? Because the population of the conference is in Texas.

If you think our TV contract sucks now, bring back the Big 8. If you think our athletic budget is too small now, bring back the Big 8. If you think we can't cut it in the Big 12 and we should join a mid-major conference well that is exactly what the Big 8 would be at this point.

Hate on the Texas schools all you want guys, but we need them more than they need us. Just look at the scenarios people are throwing out there for what happens to us if they bolt? We find ourselves on the outside of major college sports looking in. We are hitching our wagon to New Mexico, Colorado State, and Wyoming. Yeah, that sounds like the recipe for increased revenue and a better TV deal.

The past is dead, please just leave it there.

No one is saying we should leave Texas. Rather, we're exploring what could be done if Texas left us.

I think, right now, being in a conference with Texas is very good for ISU. Awhile back, I wanted out, but seeing how much $ is driving all of this, I'm glad to be in the Big 12.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see someone wants Texas out.

Yeah, it is a lot bigger than just this thread. Posts crop up around here all the time wishing for a return to the Big 8. I think that is totally ignorant. Everything today is about TV money, and TV money is driven by population. Texas is all we have to help with that. I haven't seen any scenario yet where Texas leaves and we don't end up in some new conference that is clearly a step below the current Big 12. We need them, even if they do pull all the strings in the Big 12 offices.
