Father of senior reserve rips Ames High bb coach

Gee, I'd kinda hate to be the poor kid after his dad's letter to the Ames Tribune. Guess all of that "running up the score" by Ames High came at a price.

While the dad never should have written that.....he is 100% correct. The game on ESPN was terrible by Downs.

Sounds like one of those bitter parents that want every player to get a participatory trophy.

Yeah, sour grapes much! Life is not fair, get over it. Not only that, sports are a great thing, but if 10 years down the road you are bitter about the playing time you received, then you have bigger issues than not playing in a blowout.

Re: Father of senior reserve rips Ames High bb coach

Downs lost sight of what is important in school sports. Each of those reserve players deserved better. Downs talks about the memories of the ESPN game and Senior Night, but 48 seconds of playing time for five seniors in a 28-point ESPN blowout, and Senior Night where four seniors never left the bench, have already been forgotten by some.

Harrsion Barnes or no Harrison Barnes, this is absolute B.S. if accurate. When they played on ESPN Harrsion had already committed. As a coach, I couldn't think of snubbing four guys on Senior Night. However, I've never coach at that level. He should have gotten the other kids atleast a couple minutes of time. Just my opinion.

"I loved it dearly for the experiences, for the people. I've never seen people embrace you with love as much as they did when I was in college," he said. "They just opened up their arms. I'm proud to be a Cyclone. They gave me a chance when nobody else would." -Ellis Hobbs III

Re: Father of senior reserve rips Ames High bb coach

Good post! That's a tough one as I like Vance and I think he is a good man.

Coaching a team like this is fun but I am told it is teams like this that are the real challenge. You get everybody geeked up to play you. You are trying to defend a title that comes with the tag of "If you don't, you are the guy who choked away one of the best rosters in the state's history." You have one of the top high school players in the country on your team and you have a who's who of coaching and media watching you work daily. Additionally, you have other talented players who want theirs as well (and deservedly so).

A good friend of mine won a state title coaching at another Central Iowa school. He said it was fun but it was his toughest season in coaching. The parents were more spoiled buy the success than were the kids.

Did he play guys too long, IMO yes but that is only my opinion. Did he intentionally set out to hurt kids- never.

Vance had to deal w/ a lot this year so I am going to give him some slack. I do hope that he takes time to reflect on this once in a lifetime experience that lasted over two years.

Re: Father of senior reserve rips Ames High bb coach

College coaches give their seniors some playing time on Senior Day. I don't know all the facts but if 4 seniors didn't get any playing time, that's terrible. Especially in the high school world. It's the well deserved reward that seniors get for putting in 4 years of hard work.

Its kind of a lose-lose situation for a coach in his situation. "Why isn't my kid playing" to a "Why in the hell is that kid playing" type of deal.

I thought all the Ames kids who wanted more playing time open enrolled to Gilbert.
