    Conference Expansion / Extinction

    Interesting article:

College Conferences Ponder Expansion and Extinction - NYTimes.com

The Big Ten adding Notre Dame?

The Big Ten adding Missouri, Rutgers, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Connecticut?

    Other conferences adding teams?

    Texas joining the SEC?

The SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Pac-10 forming 16-team "superconferences" and abandoning the NCAA?

    Wow...interesting stuff.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I don't see why the Big 12 refuses to be pro-active. Texas likely doesn't want to leave where it can reign, so why not use the death of the Big East to bolster things?

Texas to the SEC won't happen, it would make their road to the National Championship about 10x harder than it currently is.

I have the same fear. Hopefully, things are already happening behind closed doors or Dan Beebe is a fool.

    Re: Conference Expansion / Extinction

I really think the most likely outcome is that the Big 10 poaches 3 Big East teams, or ND, and the Big 12, SEC, and ACC snap up the rest of the Big East and have some 14 team conferences. The BE basketball only schools form their own conference or join mid-majors.

I'm not sure why the Pac-10 is so powerful in all of this, I'd think the Big 12 is considered a much more powerful conference, football wise. A lot of Pac-10 teams have half full stadiums and apathetic fan bases. Only USC is a real powerhouse.

    Re: Conference Expansion / Extinction

I don't see Texas going to the SEC. Assuming that Mizzou would be the only team that would be leaving, the Big12 will survive. Why would Texas want to go from top 2 team in the big12 to a top 5 team in the SEC? Also, what happens if ND tells the Big10 to **** off? Would the Big10 still add that many teams without their #1 target? I keep hearing that the Big10 is talking about adding 5 teams, but why? If ND isn't moving then why not just grab up Rutgers and take the money grab that would result.

    Re: Conference Expansion / Extinction

What people don't realize is that there are academic priorities to joining a conference too. Texas barely joined the Big 12 due to acadmics, so there is no way they would join the SEC. Now Pac-10, that's a different story.

    Re: Conference Expansion / Extinction

Unfortunately I can see ISU stuck in a mid-major type conference in the next 5 years. I think the Big 12 and Big East can be absorbed into the other conferences. The Big 12 lacks audience if Texas is ever lured away.

ISU could be stuck with mid plains state teams like Colorado ST., Wyoming, Boise ST., etc. and 2nd tier Texas teams. Maybe something like Conference USA if they were lucky.

I don't say this to upset ISU fans but think it is a startling reality.

TV markets is all I can guess: LA, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle vs. Austin, KC, OK City, Denver

    Re: Conference Expansion / Extinction

This has gotten to the point where I can't even guess. I would like ND to join the Big Ten because i am sick of the special treatment they get. I would also like the Big 12 to stay like it is. I don't know that it would be good for the SEC to get Texas. They complain right now about being punished for being the toughest conference. This whole thing is a mess as far as speculation. There are so many things that could happen.

The Pac-10 is the only major conference that actually has a worse TV deal than the Big12. They may want to add teams, but I don't see why teams like Colorado would be interested. Personally, I think the Mountain West should be the conference looking to expand. If they could grab a team like Boise then they might have a claim for an automatic BCS bid.

That's true. Texas thinks very highly of their academics, and that's been a reason they've been linked to the Big 10. But the SEC is a joke academically. To think that Texas doesn't want control is silly.

Doubtful, especially if football continues to improve and becomes competitive in the whole conference.
