CBS/TBS making joint bid to cover the 96-team March Madness

ESPN holds firm on NCAA men's basketball tournament television bid, report says - ESPN

Some interesting tidbits from the article:

CBS and Turner would alternate years televising the Final Four, the publication said.
Great...another major sporting event being taken off of OTA...

Earlier this week, the Sports Business Journal reported that CBS did not make money on this year's tournament.
Then perhaps maybe CBS overpaid for the rights...

Also of note from another article linked on that page:

Ohio State's Gene Smith, the incoming NCAA tournament committee chairman, wants to keep the event as it is, or make a slight alteration, as he told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

The championship should always be available OTA.. hopefully that always will involve CBS.

As long as ESPN doesn't get it I'd be happy.

Why? They've got the most channels, they'd be the best option.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

ABC owns ESPN... so you'd likely have your regional game on ABC and alternative options on ESPN. Win-win

and then epsn 2 could carry another game. Almost every game would be available to watch if espn won the bid.

I think ESPN getting it would be the best possible deal.

If it has to go to cable, ESPN would be good because there would be other places to see it. Personally, I would like to see it stay with CBS.

Let's go to 156 teams so we could have a chance to get in.

Re: CBS/TBS making joint bid to cover the 96-team March Madness

My problem with ESPN taking over the tournament would be the obvious audio disappointment in every single analyst and broadcaster's voice everytime an ACC or Big East school lost. The rooting for those two conferences is absolutely apparent everytime they cover basketball.

Outside of that, their coverage would be the best.

Assuming we could make a 156-team field...

The NCAA Board of Governors will supposedly vote on it 4/29. I presume the CBS/TNT bid is based on a 96-team scenario. Let's hope the Board of Governors vote against expansion and tell the bidders to resubmit but I doubt that happens. Using last season's results, it's sickening to think that a team like TX Tech can be in the NCAA tournament with a 4-12 conference record or North Carolina with a 5-11 record.

I read where over 80% of fans polled are against tournament expansion but it appears they are going to jam it down our throats. Then you have a vast majority of fans wanting a college football playoff of some kind and we don't see it and probably won't for several years.
