    Another Dilema Thread

    Hi all,

In the spirit of the other dilema threads (little girl that was awful at baseball, guy that wanted to take time off to interview somewhere else) I have one of my own that I need some advice on. So I am a first-year law student at U of I, and after waiting to hear back from some firms I had sent my resume to, I decided to take an unpaid clerkship with a judge. Working for this judge would mean an hour and fifteen minute commute daily, and as mentioned before, was unpaid. I took this job assuming that no other options would come my way.

Earlier this week a firm got back to me, and I went in and interviewed today. I thought the interview went fairly well, but the attorney who interviewed me told me it could be 3 weeks or so until he makes a decision. As luck would have it, my first day for the judge is supposed to be in 3 weeks.

Logistically, the firm job would be great. Its about 5 miles from home, and it pays...which is especially nice considering my wife is due in late June. How would you suggest approaching this issue, where I don't want to make the judge mad because, if I don't get the firm job, he would be my only option for employment, but where you don't want to drop the fact you got a different job on him the day before you start?

Let him know now if you are going to consider the other position. It may lose you that position, but it's certainly the right way to go about it.

Which is exactly why someone in law wouldn't do it.

Thank the judge for the wonderful opportunity, but ask if you can have another week or two before you have to start. Let him know that your wife is due in June and your family situation is requiring you to follow up on another opportunity.

If it is an unpaid position, he/she may not mind giving you another couple of weeks.
