Worse program, Walden Days or McDermott Days?

We were talking at work which was worse, I would say McDermott, I do not recall all these issues during the Walden days. We at least won a big game on occassions.

Re: Worse program, Walden Days or McDermott Days?

    Another brilliant thread...good work.

And to answer your question..you can't compare the two because there weren't message boards in Walden's days so there wasn't constant information...good or bad

We didn't have message boards for drama queens to make it feel like the the sky is falling when Walden was here...

Walden did have one winning season and beat at least one Top 10 ranked team...

I say walden days, nobody could envision a bright future for football when he was here, nor after he was leaving....with basketball, we just need to spend 2 Mill on a coach and players to restore ourselves back to our rightful place as a big 12 power.

...and also lost to UNI twice in three years (by 17 and 14), and probably should have also lost to the Panthers in both '87 and '88 (won by 3 and 1). He also quit recruiting in-state because of Fry/Iowa, and then really flew the white flag by going to the triple option the last few years.

Walden didn't have the institutional support McDermott has had...

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

Re: Worse program, Walden Days or McDermott Days?

Walden didn't have the advantages McDermott has so I'll go with Greg. The football facilities were a complete joke during that era. No Jacobson building, no indoor practice facility, astro turf field, little fan support, etc. Greg has a great practice facility, Hilton is (was) well respected as being a tough place to play and he has tremendous fan support.

In McDermott's defense, he also has beaten a top ten ranked team.

Re: Worse program, Walden Days or McDermott Days?

Walden......took over a program with ZERO tradition and institutional support (money, facilities, etc)

Gmac.......took over a program one year removed from the tourney and 4 years removed from back-to-back B12 championships, Hilton, fan support, etc

I would say the Walden days were darker, but not necessarily because of the two coaching jobs involved.
