Off-campus Housing. cheaper living, helluva lot of fun with the roommates. Nothing beats finding a desk-top someone throws out, then making a bar out of it.

I could have answered yes to 2 of those options. Spent 2 years in the dorms then joined a fraternity and spent 2-1/2 years there. (Best of both worlds!

I lived in the Wilson for 2 years, and those years were great. The living conditions may not of been that great, but being next to the disc golf course and all the people were a blast.
Then 1 year in a apartment on beedle drive, then 2 years in a house on lettie street.
They all had different pro's and cons though I think I prefer off campus housing, though I loved my 2 years in the dorms as well.

I lived in about 3 different apartments during my time at ISU. I only knew a few friends that lived in the dorms and they pretty much talked me out of ever living in those. Mostly the fact that most were too small. Although some of the newer apartment/ dorms seemed pretty nice.

Yea the dorms were fairly small to fit a couple people in there. But me and my roommate bunked our beds to double the space. I loved being in the dorms, but I like having my own room/area a bit more. The dorms were great for meeting a ton of people; and there was always something going on, which was nice.

That is one thing I would have liked a bit more at the apartments. You really had to make a bigger effort to get to know all your neighbors. Some of my neighbors turned out to be great friends, it just took me awhile to get to know some of them.

Frats/sororities are headed down per a letter I just received as the other living options are better, no formal rush week, and drinking not a majopr draw. Anyone else think it is headed up or down at Ames for frats, etc?

Generally speaking, the Greek system is down accross the nation. Binge drinking has become a visible problem to a lot of people and the Greek system is the first to suffer because it's something that can be controlled in many ways.

Lived on 5th floor of Wallace in the towers for 4 yrs and one year off campus on 6th street across from the cop station. Greeks were geeks when I was there. A bunch of wannabee's who had their fancy little Dorothy Hamill haircuts and didn't impress me one little bit. Absolutely loved living in the Towers. Our floor was the Gilman ZOO and the ZOO shirts were made to make fun of the frat boys Many goodtimes happened in that place.

    Re: Res, Greek, Indep??

I like the dorms while I was there, met a lot of people that I'm still friends with. But the house we rented on Stanton was truely awesome - nothing better than walking on campus during the week and having random people say "hey, stanton-guy, I was at your party" 99% of the time I'd have no idea - I enjoyed the parties a little too much most of the time.

Didn't go greek because I didn't need to buy my friends

    Re: Res, Greek, Indep??

I know this may not be a popular opinion, but as a Greek person (a real Greek person, i.e. of Greek descent), I always didn't like fraternities and sororities being called Greek.

Once when I was on Cy Ride someone asked me if I was Greek. I said "yes", but then figured out what they meant and had to explain I was actually Greek .

You know my answer, clones_jer. Even though I was only fortunate to live there 1 out of my 5 1/2 years in Ames, by far the best place was the good ol' 327!
