    Strength and Conditioning

After watching the latest spring practive videos there are a few players I noticed that look much bigger. Maggitt, Alburtis, and Rump seem to have gained some lb's. McDonough looks a little lean for a DL but good work out of him to gain back the weight and his long frame can easily add on 20 more lb's.

Tau'fo'ou looks thick and real solid. Benton almost looks like a OLB with the weight he packed on.

After a year it seems like you can tell the work McKnight has done with the players at least from the eye ball test. I would like to know what quantitative gains the players have made in the weight room.

Thats the key. Size is good and all, but speed is the most important physical aspect we need to improve on.

That might have been the idea. Perhaps they are planning on running a lot of sets with a hybrid safety/LB and they told Benton to be ready to fill that role. There have been a lot of teams that have had quite a bit of success with that and with the Big12's wide open offenses it makes sense.

I have been to several workouts and they focus a lot on speed and agility. Coach McKnight is the head strength coach but Clayton Oyster takes the lead on the speed and agility stuff. Everything they do is for the purpose of becoming a better player on the field. They work very hard and very smart. I wish they would test 40's but they don't, and they didn't at Rice. I understand why they don't but I love looking at those numbers. BTW David Simms was the S&C index champion again this year with.......

    ......Beau Blankenship a close second.
