New HS Stadium in Allen (Dallas) TX

If drawings are any indication, Allen's new football stadium will turn some heads | High School Sports Blog | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

    http://www.allenisd.org/200610610155...m%20Update.pdf

Could you imagine any school district in Iowa passing a $120 million bond issue for a football stadium (among other things)? How much did Valley Stadium cost?

Re: New HS Stadium in Allen (Dallas) TX

HS football in Texas is insane. We live about 10 blocks from one of the SA stadiums and we avoid going near that place on Friday nights...traffic is insane.

They then built a NEW one bigger and better just 10 minutes from this one...it had to cost $30 million and it's just a football field. Another case of (my guess) donated land that needed about $10 million in site work to be usable....but we saved $2 million by not having to buy the land that didn't need any site work done to it. : ) Seems like SA gets a lot of those deals.

Developer "Here, why don't we donate this little corner over here for the city to build a (Insert one...park / stadium / muni building / school)???"

City "You mean this massive, solid granite mound...and the giant water way next to it?"

Developer "Why sure...we'd GIVE you that land....in lieu of say us paying taxes for...say 10 years on the rest of the property we have here"

City..."WOW FREE LAND! We can build an X on it and save tax payers a fortune!!!"

Developer "And how about we go hunting down at my ranch...I think you left your $15k shotgun and new boots in my cabin last time down there".

    Sickening. Really sickening.

What a country we might have if we put this much emphasis on education instead of athletics?

My niece lives in Chaska Minn, they open a new high school next year. They are already laying off teachers for their new 2nd high school in that town. BUT, the practice field for baseball has turf, not real grass. Is sports getting out of hand?

One factor to consider though, at least at the berry center, is that the stadium\arena complex is shared across multiple schools in the district. Also, much like our football program, i bet the football program through ticket sales and such pays for itself. Also, it opens up opportunities to host other major events. When i was at the berry center last summer (was in houston visiting a friend and going to a drum corps show at the berry center stadium) the arena was hosting Cirque du Soleil.

Also, the facilities host many other things for the school district, meetings, graduations, etc.

Re: New HS Stadium in Allen (Dallas) TX

How can that possibly be $120 million for a 18,000-person stadium, even with the auditorium and nutrition center and other facilities?

I mean UCONN's stadium holds 40,000 and was constructed for $90 million just a few years ago.

The same is true for the district I work in. The entire district uses our stadium. That is 6 high school and about 9 middles schools.

I think the difference between uconn's stadium and this high school is that the high school stadium is using a lot of brick and stone in their design while uconn is kinda bare where you can see the underneath of the bleachers just looking from the outside. Not much appeal to uconn's stadium, kinda like ours.

Field turf (which i'm assuming is what was installed) is cheaper to maintain than grass surfaces.

Re: New HS Stadium in Allen (Dallas) TX

Didn't they just implode a pretty nice stadium in Dallas this weekend? They probably could have owned that thing for the cost of the ground lease. Per Wikapedia(If you believe it) the graduation rate in Dallas Schools was 43%. It appears that education is not the primary goal of schools. This was 7th lowest in the nation.

Edit This school is not in the Dallas School District. It is in a much wealthier district which does have higher graduation rates. The stadium really isn't even a burden to their resources.
