    Walking Trails (Ames)

Where are the better trails in Ames? What is the best length of time to walk or distance?

I'm trying to get friends to go and walk through out the week and they always draw a blank look when I ask where they want to go.

I personally like the trail around Ada Hayden.
This link provides more information for trails and parks around the Ames area: Parks & Recreation
    I hope this helps!!!

Halletts Quarry (there it is above me Ada Hayden). Inis Grove Park has a really nice trail that runs along the Skunk River all the way down to Carr Pool.

There are some cool trails around Brookside Park. Some really good ones around Ledges.

I agree with Ada Hayden. It's a nice place to walk, run or bike.

    McFarlane Park, Hands Down

Having grown up in Ames and having attended ISU, I highly recommend McFarlane Park.

It's a couple of miles East of Ada Hayden, but is the prettiest park close to Ames with a lake and extensive trails through woods, streams, bridges, etc.

There I know I got that one right.

    Re: Walking Trails (Ames)

I'm blowing the cover on this and I am sure to regret it, but check out the Skunk River Greenbelt. It's not a contiguous trail, but there are entry points at Soper's Mill, the south-bound I-35 rest stop, Anderson Canoe Access and on E-18 in Story City.

2nd Soper's Mill. May go there tonight.

We also walk on the path that is south of the high school (by the new pool) as it is a short walk from our house.

    Re: Walking Trails (Ames)

I'm a biker and would love to go on more trails but there are a lot of people with dogs on leashes at Ada Hayden which makes it a little difficult.
I'm not starting a biking/walking/dog war, just a little FYI for people that might think about biking out there.

Seriously though, why do dogs on leashes make it difficult for biking?

I own a bike, and a dog, and can't for the life of me figure this one out....

because some people just want to ride and not have to worry about some person that doesn't know how/want to control their dog running out in front of them or anticipating what they are going to do as you approach and ride past them.
