    2008 InState recruits.

What are our chances with some off the top talent in Iowa for next year?
Heres some of the top players in the order of importance of getting them IMO.

Jake McDonough - 6-5/225/- West Des Moines, IA (We need DL,best in state)

L.J. Gamblin - 6-3/215/- Des Moines, IA (Good looking athlete)

Ben Cotton - 6-6/210/- Ames, IA (doubt thatll happen)

Nate DeJong - 6-3/200/- Rock Rapids, IA (Great athlete, bulk up to LB)

Adam Robinson - 5-9/185/- Des Moines, IA (hear the's the best RB in state)

Steven Staggs - 6-3/180/4.5 Oskaloosa, IA (teammate of EIU recruit Ty Sash)

Justin Ewald - 6-5/210/- West Des Moines (Size on the DE spot)

Willie Argo - 6-1/205/- Davenport, IA (i grew up in DPort, so i gotta give him some love)

Anyone have any insight on any of these players?!? I cant wait for commits to come pouring in. Hopefully we commits a little faster than last year. I think we only had 6 or so by late November.

Those could be some good grabs. I'm still hopeing we start to land some major Texas HS players in the coming years. No offense to the state of Iowa (I was born and raised there) but football is on a different level down here. A level that I would love to see makes it way to ISU.

    Re: 2008 InState recruits.

Totally agree. I dont care where they come from, as long as they can play. I just know a lil more about the Iowa recruits. There are soooo many recruits in the state of Texas, Florida, and the south in general. Id like to see 2-5 Iowa boys a year and the rest from everwhere else. I expext quite a few from Texas, Okla, and Miss. this year.

Hopefully the recruiting will go up. As you said, so long as the can play. And I should be clear that I do think we need to grab the instate talent too. I guess I'm getting greedy :)

    Re: 2008 InState recruits.

What about Joe Johnson from West Des Moines Valley? I know some people on here don't like him, but that kid is an athlete.

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

Bill Argo from Davenport played baseball at ISU back in the 70's and then played a couple years of minor league baseball. I'm not sure, but I think he is Willie Argo's dad.

We need to put the best players we can on the field. But it all starts by grabbing Iowa's best (and maybe some of Iowa's neighbor's best too).

Not to sound like a jerk, but Iowa is probably one of the 10 worst states for high school football in the country. I get way more excited when we sign a guy from florida that is a "decent" player as opposed to the "Iowa Player of the Year." I was born and raised in Iowa but the level of competition is really low.

    Re: 2008 InState recruits.

I wonder if Jake McDonough is the son of Shamus McDonough who was a good player on defensive line in the early 80's. He and Marc Butts were the starting tackles, and I think Shamus was from Corning and Butts was from Des Moines.

It is not competition, it is participation. It is all a numbers game. For example, if we could create 50 regional high schools, and have 50 high school football teams the participation numbers would drop, but the good football players would still be playing. The coaching would be improved and recruiting made much easier. You take a quick, 6-5 250 pound, big framed boy, put him on a one or two win a season team, chances are no one finds him. You put him in a school, in the scenario I mentioned above and everyone knows his name. I believe there are a lot of needles in our haystacks, the are just too hard to find. I like GC, when he said he wanted to know every high school coach in the state, finding 4 or 5 "needles" a year would be real neat at ISU.

    Re: 2008 InState recruits.

You have to realize also that most of the southern states that are known as "football states" also have spring football-equating to almost another full season of practices by the time a student has graduated.
I wouldn't complain too much about Iowa kids. We have plenty of big contributors on our roster from our state.

Sorry-Terrible idea. That would take away the opportunity to play football for literally thousands of student-athletes and might ultimately do more harm than good. There are too many studies that show the positive aspect of high school sports to take the opportunity away from thousands like that.

    I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I refuse the notion that I would actually want a mass high school consolidation in Iowa. It was just a premise to compare the size of schools and the football programs in larger states with Iowa programs. My post was to point out, that with huge number of large programs in any given state, it is probably easier to identify potential recruits.

    Shamus McDonough
Do you think he might be Irish. Was his middle name Patrick?

McDonough is a real talent. I watched some of his highlight films after Kansas was the first to offer him. We just got to keep on riding that WDM-Valley pipeline.
