Near Miss By 71 foot Asteroid last night

Astronomers in Arizona have spotted an asteroid which will pass relatively close to Earth this Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 23:06 U.T.C. (4:06 p.m. PDT, 7:06 pm EDT). But it should pose no problem, as at the time of closest approach asteroid 2010 GA6 will be about 359,000 kilometers (223,000 miles) away from Earth about 9/10ths the distance to the moon. The asteroid is approximately 22 meters (71 feet) wide.

To paraphrase George Carlin, it's not a "near miss", it's a "near hit". If this rock plowed into the earth, the bystanders who weren't pulverized could say, "Wow, the asteroid nearly missed."

To be fair, you ran one drilling crew and I ran the other. Not my fault we missed our landing zone.

If 223,000 miles is considered close, than peeing your pants is really cool.

Question for smart folks out there regarding asteroids. If a large one passed by the earth so close that a small portion of skimmed our atmosphere, but never had impact, what effect would it have on us? Would it stir up anything?

I would guess it would have no effect, since the moon's only real tangible effect on Earth is the movement of tides. Something would have to be huge to have an effect, and even if it was, it would be transitory...if it missed.

    Just a guess, though.

Did you play with animal crackers on Liv Tyler's belly though? That is the question.
