    Most embarrassing moment..

When I was in sixth grade, I went to a catholic school. We always had some kind of holy day we had to observe, and would be trudged to the church for (what seemed like) an hour of praying etc. Pain in the butt, but I guess it didn't hurt me any.

It was a spring observance of some kind or another (Blessings of the Throat, Ash Wed) and our class was provided the "opportunity" to do the first reading. Since I was one of the best readers in class (meaning I could pronounce all the words), Mrs Doggett chose me to give the reading.

She gets me up to the lecturn, and we find the passage, and mark it with one of those colored strings they section off the Bible with, and I sit down, up to the one side of the altar. The priest is going to say some mumbo jumbo, them I'm supposed to say " the first reading is Mark to the Philippians" or something of that nature, and recite the passage. Piece of cake.

Now its my turn, the priest gives me the nod, and I get up to the lecturn, look at the crowd, and FREEZE. Where did all those people come from? More importantly, what color was that string? So I grab the red one and flip the Bible open, and start to read...and realize its not the right passage. Now I'm really panicking. I'm going to say something to appease that impatient mob, but when I open my mouth, this horrible sound comes out. My nervous laughter. Being known as the class clown anyway, this is NOT GOOD.

Suddenly, God takes mercy on my plight, and I spy the correct passage, right string, wrong side of the page. I hustle through it and sit down, but the look on Dogface's mug tells me that this isn't over by a long shot.

We get back to class, and she starts the dressdown, right in front of the class. I'd embarrassed her, our class, and possibly the whole city by actually laughing at the parishoners (sp?) and God himself, and then came the words that let me know everything would be alright. "You will NEVER get the opportunity to read in church as long as you are in my class!" Thank you Mrs Dogbreath.

I use this technique at home with my wife all the time. Do the laundry, cooking or whatever poorly enough, and after you take your lumps, you won't be asked to do it again for a long time.

So what you are saying MB4, is that my wife may actually know how to do laundry and she ****** up my clothes once on purpose. (posted in between loads of laundry)

This is the correct answer. I have used it with success.

Unfortunately, she uses this technique too on any work that crosses the threshhold outside the house.

Wish I had more of that problem. Wife likes to mow ocassionally (exercise), which is cool, but then I often need to follow behind and re-position the landscape lighting.

Unfortunately, this works the other way around as well. If I try to get my significant other to help me with something like fixing stuff around the house, she plays dumb and pretends (?) to not know how to do it. She gets out of it pretty easily.

I once walked out of the handicap stall to a person waiting in a wheelchair. Now THAT is embarrassing.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

    Re: Most embarrassing moment..

In a large group of people, I've asked a couple who I hadn't seen in a year (and last time I had seen them, they were expecting a child) how their kid was doing. their response was "we miscarried", followed by an awkward silence from the entire group.

that's a mistake you only make once

    Re: Most embarrassing moment..

I spent 5 minutes washing marker off my face in the bathroom at parks library after apparently tutoring with it on my face for an hour.

I finish washing and turn around and see the stall door open. Out walks a little Asian woman.....I turned and literally ran to the door.

    Re: Most embarrassing moment..

I used to sell mens wear in a dept. store many years ago. I was once measuring a man to help size out a dress shirt, and when I was checking his sleeve length, I asked him if he would raise his arm for me. He responded, "I'd love to, but it's paralyzed."

I think the awkward silence still hangs in the air at that store to this day.
