    Spring Lawn Care

I hadn't seen any talk about lawn care much this spring.

So what is everyone's plans? When does everyone start to fertilize and what do you use? Also, I've never used an aerator before and I'm thinking of renting one. Does anyone have an opinion on which kind to use...plug or spike?

    Re: Spring Lawn Care

I'm too lazy to do anything yet, but happy to see the dormant overseeding I tried in November appears to be working.

I rented a plug aerator once. This particular one was a ***** to use for the most part, but probably helped my lawn quite a bit.

When you used the plug aerator did you have to go behind and rake up and spread out all the plugs?

Aren't the plugs pretty well spread out to begin with? Why rake?

I really need to get a power rake and overseed this year. Been a couple since I did. We have a locust tree with the little stems and small leaves, so the thatch layer gets really think. Especially this year since winter hit before I could really clean up alot of it.

Otherwise, probably overseed and starter. Don't really have much issue with crabgrass since it's so shady.

Honestly, i think you may be a little late if you are planning to aerate and overseed now. That should be done in the fall in order to get the best results.

For my own lawn, i applied a fertilizer/weed preventer in early March, and will likely put down another application by the end of the month. Lawn looks green and full so far - fingers crossed!

If you have any crabgrass, better get some preventer down shortly or you will pay for it later in the summer.

    Re: Spring Lawn Care

I have the crabgrass preventer to put down this weekend, however I always use a hand held spreader to apply it, is a push one better? I know it holds more, but I didnt know if it actually worked better.

No, I didn't. And I agree with TheHelgo - it's probably best to do this stuff in the fall (if you were planning to overseed, that is). That way there is less competition from weeds.

I'm not going to do crap this year. My grass is 4 years old and every year I do a ton and it just kind of looks blah. My neighbor whose grass is also 4 years old does nothing and it always looks great.

I guess the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence.

    Re: Spring Lawn Care

My lawn is a big thorn in my side every summer. I have a hill that causes a lot of washout on the west and north sides of my lawn.

I aerate and overseed every year but it's not enough. Every month, the rain just washes a little more of my grass away.

I'm gonna warn you. Last year for the first time ever I didn't do crap and I'm paying the price dearly this year.

Not according to the lawn co. I go through. They are coming to aerate and seed within the next few weeks. You do the same in the Fall if needed. My lawn has tons of bald spots from my dog tearing it up so I need to overseed.

    There was one?
