    Brad Penrith

I don't have the link but I heard he got the boot. They messed up by giving him an extension last year.

    Re: Brad Penrith

No mess up at all. I don't believe that the extension had any additional buyout costs and they needed to do the extension to let people know that they were not going to drop the program. (they had been rumored to be considering this following baseball being cut).

The extension likely worked as Penrith (good guy btw) went out beat out ISU for Weatherman and Iowa for Wolfensperger (sp?). Without the extension, it could be debated if they get those kids

    Re: Brad Penrith

Having lived in CF for a few years until last August, I think they made a mistake. Unless of course they are going to start spending money on the wrestling program. A lot of the locals didn't like him and only looked at results compared to the glory days of UNI wrestling. Nobody wants to take into consideration that in the recent past a number of schools have upped their commitment to the sport while UNI has not.

    Re: Brad Penrith

They gave him an extension then fired him? That's a Pollard-esque move right there.

    Re: Brad Penrith

Someone move this to In State rivals. Penrith's extension was for recruiting purposes. The agreement had no teeth. It had a clause that said if he was fired before March 31st he got $100k so they waited till after march 31st to do the deed.

Hope is not a method. Soon is not a time.

It wasn't Penrith beating out Iowa or ISU for these two, it was UNI offered them more money. If they could have gotten the same amount of scholarship money from either Iowa or ISU they would have been a Hawk or Clone and not a Panther.

    This is a great post.

To get the wrestlers he did without a big recruiting budget speaks volumes.

The question is, does this mark the beginning of the end for wrestling at UNI?

That's the first thing I thought of this morning after reading only the DMReg headline. UNI has a lot more $ invested in its athletics department than ISU or UI, and they've as much as said that if they follow the regents directive to eliminate that funding, something(s) will have to go. Wrestling easily could be one of those things.

Point well taken and correct. I was not very clear on that.

    Re: Brad Penrith

As it has been stated earlier, I don't think they can drop wrestling without impacting their status with the NCAA. What I think this is is the spineless AD had to do something to appease some of the locals who seem to think that a high school wrestling room will get it done at this level. With the state of their facilities I don't think they can do better than Brad at this time.

Let it be known that I know Brad, my kids and his played together daily, so I'm a little biased on this one. I know for a fact that he wasn't paid all that well considering and could make more as an assistant at many schools. My hope is that he lands on his feet.

If you know him and want to really be ******, wait till you hear how it went down then you'll really want to change the wording of your first paragraph.
