It's a fairly common practice, I believe they call it jogging, or yogging, it might be a soft j.

I had actually only been inside for about 20 minutes from my run when it started coming down. When I left, it was still sunny and 80.

They probably tired of running in grandpa's attic, so they wondered about running outside this time.....won't make that mistake again!! :)

probably got caught out in it....who knows how far they were running, and maybe thought they'd beat it. probably didn't anticipate golf ball hail. what are the odds of that??

I was at the boys' state track meet several years ago when something like this happen. The officials tried to give everyone plenty of time to take shelter, but it came up in a hurry. The track looked like it was covered in snow -- that's how much it hailed.

My mother (a farm wife) got caught out in a hail storm helping my dad spread fertilizer I believe. She said she went to church the next day looking like a battered wife.

    I remember that.

Side note: Did anybody think it was funny when the runners stated that they were worried they might drown in the ditch because of the rain? Reminds me of the henchman in Austin Powers who just stands there and screams powerlessly as AP approaches on a steamroller from about 30 feet away until it runs him over about a minute later.

I remembered a similar thing happening to the riders on the Tour of Switzerland a few years ago. It was a mountain stage and many of you know that the weather can change unpredictably and quickly at higher altitude.

Here is a quick blurb with pic...

Yet you did know that the area was under a Torndao Watch and that conditions can change on a dime?

I don't know if you were part of the story from the KCCI website or not, but in this day and age of instant information, the Grinnell cross country coach should've been monitoring the latest information and altered the route so that the kids would have access to safety (gas station or another business) in the event severe weather did occur.

This heads up from the NWS is from yesterday and was on their website (weather.gov)

Watches and Warnings are a little different. Almost everyday in spring is a T storm watch.

Re: Grinnell Runner pelted with hail

When I was in high school, something similar to this happened, only without the marjor storm that followed. We just had a 2 minute beat down of golfball size and larger sized hail. Driving out into the country, I could see the hail coming probably 5-10 miles away, it looked like a white wall, about 3 miles wide. It was pretty intense.

I'm guessing that the coach probably thought that there was a storm coming, lets get a quick, short, workout in and be done with it for the day, not knowing that there was hail in the forecast. Maybe practice was even cancelled and these guys decided to go out for a run any ways. It was probably cooler temperatures, so it probably felt good to run in those temperatures...not while being beaten by hail.
