Fired! What to put on job app....?

My wife was fired last week, long story short because she was looking into an opening within the same company that was not directly related to her current job. Her boss used the fact that she was looking (and being honest about looking) to justify firing her on grounds of not being focused on her current job. Because she was fired, she will be ineligible for the job she was looking at in the first place.

She's doing well in the job hunt, but a tough question came up this morning: what do you put on a job application that asks to list all previous jobs, and why you left the job? That's definitely something you don't want to lie about, but at the same time I'd worry that if you wrote you were fired, you might not even get an interview to explain yourself. Any advice here would be appreciated.....

Let go due to staffing cuts. If they call her previous employer, all they are legally allowed to say is whether or not she worked there. Anything more sets them up for a potential lawsuit.

You sure about them only being able to say whether she worked there? My guess is it's more of a liability thing that would keep them from saying more.

I believe he is correct. They can't go over anything more then the basic information like your beginning and end date of employment. I don't think they can talk about the TPS report that you always forget to put a coversheet on, or that you cut out of work every morning to go grab coffee with your coworkers.

Neither did the guy that fired the OP's wife. Talk about a totally bogus reason for terminating someone's employment. Wow. I guess they don't want people looking to move up in that company.

Tell the truth. She was looking to move up in the company and her boss fired her because of it.

He is correct. They can only answer about length of employment and wether or not they would rehire the employee

You shouldn't lie about it. Many people have been fired from jobs and HR people understand this. Hiring is guesswork and firings happen to good people every day. HR people will look at the experience you have and whether it matches their current need. The interview is where you will get a chance to defend being fired.

The OP's wife should have a discussion with someone higher up at the Company that fired her to let them know that a manager is not interested in employees that want to advance in the Company.

My guess is that her boss' boss would not like that as a reason to fire a good employee. If she was not a good employee and this is the excuse, then file for unemployment, fight it, and find a better company next time.

    +1
    That was just too obvious.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Plus 100 on this. If your wife knows anyone else in the company and can prove the reasons behind her dismissal she should push the issue. Not in a fight the system way, but in a way of going concern for her now former employer.

I would approach a higher manager with the concern, but only with concrete proof. Things like previous performance reviews should be able to show i she was material ready to promote.

If she makes a professional case she may come out of this better than she thinks.

Re: Fired! What to put on job app....?

If the firing was because she was looking to advance her career, I might research/discuss what legal avenues might be available to you as well. I am one of those that usually abhors this overtly litigious society that thinks it's okay to sue if someone over a paper cut, however, IMO, wrongful termination suits don't fall into that purview.

I have heard this same thing at my current employer. If contacted, all they will do is confirm that you have worked there.

Re: Fired! What to put on job app....?

I would (and have) tell the truth and explain why she was fired. It sounds like a pretty bogus reason and most hiring managers will understand.

But in this economic environment, she could easily say that she was downsized and they will obviously buy it.
