    Severe WX 4/6/10

Well, last night stayed relatively calm as far as severe weather is concerned. We did get some thunderstorms rolling through overnight.

Currently we have a low pressure system centered over southwest IA with a cold front extended south/west and a warm front stretched east across IA. The warm front has been moving slowly north and is roughly along and north of I-80.

There is plenty of shear in the atmosphere and we have some nice clearing along the warm front with rising temperatures and dewpoints.

The NWS mentions the I-80/Hwy 30 corridor along and east of a line from Jefferson to Stuart as being a location primed for some nasty storms.

"SEVERE STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE
EARLY EVENING HOURS. THE THREAT FOR DISCRETE TORNADIC SUPERCELLS
IS INCREASING. THE GREATEST THREAT FOR A FEW STRONG TORNADOES
EXIST ESPECIALLY ALONG THE HIGHWAY 30 AND INTERSTATE 80 CORRIDORS
EAST OF A JEFFERSON TO STUART LINE. THIS COULD BECOME A
    PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

THESE STORMS WILL ALSO BE CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE HAIL TO THE SIZE
OF BASEBALLS AND STRAIGHT LINE WIND GUSTS UP TO 80 MPH. LOCALIZED
VERY HEAVY RAIN IS ALSO POSSIBLE."

I'm hoping that my lab is done early this afternoon so I can have a chance at storm chasing later this afternoon.

Since I'm located in Ames, I seem to be in a good spot to wait and see what develops. Anyone else care to comment on the severe weather potential this afternoon/evening?

It is all wait and see right now. I can tell you that at about 10 it was a bit chilly outside my office here in Urbandale. I left for lunch at 12 and it was much warmer and actually a bit muggy out. Seemed a bit odd to be muggy this time of the year.

The warm front was just south of DSM this morning and has since moved just north of DSM. On the south side, there is warmer and more moist air. North of the warm front it is cool, grungy, and with lower dewpoints.

10 AM in Des Moines: 59 degrees, 54 degree dewpoint.
1 PM in Des Moines: 80 degrees, 61 degree dewpoint.

It's a "battleground" for storms to form along later.

The sun is now out in Ames and the warm front should be nearing here (or already here) before too long.

I kind of figured last night was going to be a dud. When the first round of storms moved through it was chilly the rest of the day. Without that warm air storms usually fizzle out. Today has been much warmer and the sun was out earlier. It is a little overcast down here now. I am not sure how much that will effect the fireworks later on.

I originally read this as "Severe WAX" and thought the OP had some issues with a recent wax job.

So what are you thinking we are going to see tonight? Anything wild or more of a chance that the storms will fizzle out like they did yesterday? IMO, based on my limited knowledge it sure seems like today is a much better set up for severe weather.

Plenty of moisture coming up your way from down here. Presently, we have 25 MPH winds from the SSW gusting to 35 MPH, with 54% RH.

The storms didn't fizzle out in Eastern Iowa last night.

    Re: Severe WX 4/6/10

I'm not that great at forecasting (I'm just an amateur), but I think today has a lot more potential (especially in central Iowa) than yesterday. Everything we saw in Iowa yesterday was north of the front and had no instability to work with. Now we have a front in the area for storms to fire on, and there is a lot higher instability to feed the storms. Shear looks good along the front, so the storms shouldn't have any trouble spinning (helping to produce large hail and possibly tornadoes).

It just feels like a storm day to me. Just need to wait and see when/where storms may fire...

    Re: Severe WX 4/6/10

My temp, dew point, air pressure and humidity all rose in the last few hours. With the warmer moister air in Southern Iowa, I wouldn't be surprised to see places like Oskaloosa, Fairfield and Washington get some funnels today.
